“I congratulate the Senate for passing a long overdue reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. While no legislation is perfect, this conference report retains annual testing and transparent reporting of school performance data, provides new support for state course access programs, and supports state efforts to empower parents to choose the right schools and courses for their child.
“We are also pleased that the conference report contains other key improvements in federal education policy that we have long supported, such as: enhanced support for charter schools (including the expansion and replication of successful charter school models); demonstration authority for weighted student funding under the Title I formula; a reduction of federal regulatory authority and interference; support for innovative assessment models which can help support competency-based learning; support for digital learning and blended learning models; and consolidation of programs.
“The passage of this law restores the appropriate balance to the state-federal education relationship by giving state policymakers more authority and flexibility. We believe that the states are up to the challenge, and that the Every Student Succeeds Act will empower organizations like ours to work at the state and local level to advance policies that improve every child’s opportunity to achieve their God-given potential.”
