Southern Charm Sunday: House Party Time

For weeks and weeks now I have been beside myself with excitement because me and the little prince were chosen to host the Fisher Price Joy of Learning Play Date.

It was beyond what I expected. House Party and Fisher Price did such a great job with this party. I actually want to do another one.

 The gift bags for guests

One of the amazing toys!

The gift bags included a little people wheelie, coloring book, DVD, CD  coupons, and tips for learning at play time.

Fisher Price sent amazing toys for the kids to play with:
(I will be doing a review of each toy this week)

The kids had so much fun playing together we are already planning another play date.

Sadly, there was a bug going around, so some of the kids couldn't make it. It was still so much fun even with 3 kids. The prince even found his princess.

I absolutely adore these kids and had just as much fun catching up with an old friend as the kids had playing together.

Lets do it at the same time!

This was my first time planning an event for kids. I used to throw parties a lot, but they were usually at for adults. Lets face it- a first birthday is for the adults. I learned a lot and will share my thoughts and tips for future events next week.

Whirlwind Weeks

My last couple of weeks have been a complete whirlwind. I have been unbelievably busy- but I enjoyed them immensely! Here is what I have been up to.

The Prince played A LOT!

I made yummy pumpkin muffins

His and Hers are weaned

Mom and I were on TV promoting her book (more on that later) and my brother got to babysit the little man for me. He adores his uncle! (Of course, his uncle adores him too)

The prince had his House Party Fisher Price Play Date- It was so much fun and I promise there will be multiple posts dedicated to this.

 Birthday Pop-tarts on his birthday!

He loves rocks- I love play clothes

The Prince turned 2-
he is growing entirely too fast.
Somebody please tell me where the pause button is!

Look what I won from Gabriela at Living La Vida Normal. I just adore her and that girl is skilled. Also, I love peppers. These bags match my cookbook. I have a special plan for them I will share with you when I complete it!

These weeks were crazy but I was so happy to spend time with my mom and for her to spend time with the prince. I hate that he doesn't get to see her much, but she is really good at making her time with him count. I also loved seeing my baby brother- he recently moved to Florida to be near her and get out of the small town life. I personally love my small town life, but when I was his age, I didn't. I wouldn't be 22 again for anything. I love life and routine the closer and closer I get to 30.

My little guy is growing so fast and is so smart. The time is flying by entirely too quickly.

This was a long post full of pictures. I hope you enjoyed my recount of the last couple of weeks. I have some very exciting and handy posts lined up for next week. There will also be more details of the events of the last couple weeks.

Business Making a Difference: Campus Book Rentals

I have been in contact with some great companies lately. This one touches my heart! Not only is Campus Book Rentals  a life saver for college students, but they also are life savers for some kids.

I was thinking back to my freshman year in college- even then, it hurt handing over $500 for just a few months worth of books. It cut deep. I bought used ones when I could and sold them back when I could. That didn't really help much.

I wish Campus Book Rentals had existed then- they would have saved me from stressing about buying books.

The money saved when renting textbooks is amazing. Because I started out in with a major in Elementary Ed, I'll compare a Education 101 book. These are the books currently required by Winthrop University's School of Education.

Field Experience : A Guide to Reflective Teaching, Posner, George J. and Vivian, Craig, 0137016875
Buy: $126.75
Rent from Campus Book Rentals: $20.28

Observation Skills for Effective Teaching, Borich, Gary D., 0137039727
Buy: $69.50
Rent from Campus Book Rentals: $49.20
That is a pretty big difference. This is just for one class. Remember, most students have six to eight classes. The money saved will not only make a huge difference when saving for textbooks, but you just have to send them back, there is no need to worry about making sure you get to the bookstore to sell them and hope that they are buying that book back.

Shipping Procedure

Some other benefits from renting from Campus Book Rentals:
  • Free shipping both ways
  • No ban on highlighting
  • Flexible renting periods
  • 40-90% off buying price
  • 30 day risk-free returns
  • Live customer support
  • Largest book selection in the nation
  • They even buy books
  • Campus Book Rentals offers tons of giveaways, scholarships, and other prizes
  • A portion of each rental goes to Operation Smile.

It always warms my heart when businesses give back to the community. In the case of Campus Book Rentals, they have a purpose. Operation Smile provides children born with a cleft life saving surgery.
  • 1 in 10 children born with a cleft will die before their first birthday.
  • We are helping children in need around the world.
  • Surgeons are standing by to volunteer and provide free surgeries and train in-country doctors.
I urge you to buy your text books from Campus Book Rentals, you can help save a life!

Calling all Carolina People: Come See Me!

The big week is almost here! My Mother will be arriving Thursday for her big book appearances. In addition to being on television, she will be appearing at a great bookstore in Charlotte, NC.

Mom will be participating in a meet and greet discussion as part of their Meet The Author series. She is so excited because for her, it isn't about selling books. Its about living her dream and encouraging others to do the same.

Of course I will share with you pictures after the event, but why wait that long? Come meet us and ask mom all kinds of questions about her and her book!

Words From An Author: Tyler R. Tichelaar, Ph.D.

As many of you know, I love to read. I mostly read business books, with occasional brain candy. The problem with that is that its not enough to satisfy my thirst for knowledge. So, I enjoy reading books that are more classical education in nature. That's where Tyler R. Tichelaar and King Arthur's Children come in.

My love of the Legend of King Arthur began in elementary school and has grown immensely since. The movies and spin offs just feed my obsession. Naturally, when I was given the opportunity to read King Arthur's Children, I had to accept.

Today I’m interviewing Tyler Tichelaar about his book “King Arthur’s Children: A Study in Fiction and Tradition.” Tyler is a long-time enthusiast of the Arthurian legend, as well as a scholar who has a Ph.D. in British literature from Western Michigan University. He is also the author of numerous historical novels including “Spirit of the North: a paranormal romance” and the award-winning “Narrow Lives.” He is currently busy writing a series of Arthurian historical novels. You can find out more about Tyler at his website www.ChildrenofArthur.com

Cari: Welcome, Tyler. First of all, tell us how you first became interested in the legend of King Arthur?

Tyler: Hi, Cari. Thanks for having me. I knew about King Arthur since elementary school and had read some children’s versions of the legend, but my interest really grew when I was in ninth grade and read an old copy of Sidney Lanier’s “The Boy’s King Arthur” with N.C. Wyeth’s wonderful illustrations. After that, I couldn’t get enough of King Arthur and read everything I could—Mary Stewart’s novels, Marion Zimmer Bradley’s “The Mists of Avalon,” and scholarly works such as those of Geoffrey Ashe. And perhaps most of all, I fell in love with the musical “Camelot.” I had the record of the movie soundtrack which I played over and over to the point where my brother and parents grew sick of hearing it. I still play it almost every day.

Cari: What about the legend captured your attention?

Tyler: I think the sadness that King Arthur had such good intentions but things beyond his control resulted in the downfall of Camelot. Also the sense that anything was possible; the knights go on adventures and meet all kinds of sorceresses, hostile knights, and unexplainable mysteries. Like any boy, I longed for adventure myself.

Cari: What made you decide in writing your book to focus on King Arthur’s children specifically?

Tyler: I came across references to his having children other than Mordred, which surprised me. I was also very interested in genealogy when I started writing the book. I was going to write about Arthur’s many relatives, but narrowed it down just to his children. When I came across Geoffrey Ashe’s suggestion that Arthur was the progenitor of the British royal family and claims by the royal family itself to be descended from Arthur, I wanted to investigate the possibilities. As you read in my book, if King Arthur actually lived, it’s likely everyone of European descent and many others today are descended from him.

Cari: Do you think there may be even more children that you have not found reference to?

Tyler: Oh yes, especially in modern fiction. I have since discovered several novels I missed including, such as Helen Hollick’s powerful “The Kingmaking” and its sequels. I predicted more and more novels would mention King Arthur having children, which has been the case in recent years. I even had one author pay me a real compliment in recently creating an Arthurian descendant in his novel after reading my book. And wait until my own Arthurian series comes out. I’m hoping that the first book will be out in the fall of 2013. As for actual historical children, I think I probably found all the likely references, but it’s possible I missed some; by historical, I mean children who show up in non-modern sources—whether they are historical in the sense that they were real people is questionable and probably impossible to prove since we’re still debating and likely always will debate about whether or not King Arthur was a real person. That said, perhaps I’ll write a second edition someday with all the research and findings I’ve come across since I wrote and published the book.

Cari: As a teenager, I remember reading a reference to Lancelot and asking, “Was he actually Arthur’s son?” Are there hints at this in the main legend that just happen to be overlooked?

Tyler: Hmm, sounds like a great plot for a future novel. It would be interesting if Lancelot were Arthur’s son since he’s in love with Arthur’s wife, Guinevere; a sort of incestuous plot, not unlike ideas that Mordred tried to marry Guinevere. But no, I don’t believe anyone has suggested Lancelot as Arthur’s son. Lancelot is definitely a fictional creation from the eleventh century writer Chretien de Troyes. He has no basis in the earlier Welsh and Celtic stories that Arthur sprang from. Traditionally, Lancelot is depicted as the son of King Ban of Benwick and Queen Elaine.

Cari: Do the modern versions of the legend that create children for Arthur actually rely on the legend or do they just make up children for entertainment?

Tyler: I would say most just make up children, but there are some exceptions. In my own novels I’m writing, I’ve tried to include the Welsh children and other mentions of descendants of Arthur to be faithful to the legends. Other writers like Bernard Cornwell in his Warlord Chronicles included the Welsh children as well. Of course, most writers include Mordred, but the Welsh children of the legends, Llacheu, Gwydre, and Amr, are ignored.

Cari: Can you suggest some specific versions of the legend for my readers to read if they want to learn more about King Arthur’s children?

Tyler: That’s difficult because most of the references are very obscure and I had to piece together a lot of information. I honestly think my book “King Arthur’s Children” is the best starting point for all the references if you are interested specifically in Arthur’s children, but some modern novels that significantly treat Arthur’s children include Vera Chapman’s “King Arthur’s Daughter” and Debra Kemp’s House of Pendragon novels—both create fictional daughters for King Arthur. I already mentioned Bernard Cornwell’s books and Helen Hollick’s books—and I think Elizabeth Wein’s novels, beginning with “The Winter Prince” have quite an interesting take that brings Arthur’s descendants to Africa.

Cari: Do you have any tips for my readers who may want to research classic Arthurian literature and its alternate versions?

Tyler: A lot of universities teach courses in the Arthurian legend, so that would be a good starting point. Anthologies like James Wilhelm’s “The Romance of Arthur” and Peter Goodrich’s “The Romance of Merlin” can introduce you to many early texts. The absolute musts are “The Mabinogion” (Welsh tales that include Arthur in many of them), Geoffrey of Monmouth’s “The History of the Kings of Britain,” Chretien de Troyes’ “The Knight of the Cart,” Thomas Malory’s “Le Morte D’Arthur,” and then among modern texts, most will tell you to read T.H. White’s “The Once and Future King” and Marion Zimmer Bradley’s “The Mists of Avalon.” Those books will give a good foundation of the legend. I would recommend a few films as well—“Excalibur,” “Camelot,” and “King Arthur.” I’m always posting book and film reviews on my blog at www.ChildrenofArthur.com so you can see my recommendations there as well. Lately, I’ve been reading my way through all the volumes of the Prince Valiant comic strip and writing reviews of them.

Cari: I would love to see your book as a dramatic documentary; are there any plans for this?

Tyler: I’m not sure my book would lend itself to a good documentary, although it does read a bit like a detective story. But there are some good documentaries out there about the Arthurian legend already, including an A&E biography of King Arthur and several by the History channel and others.

Cari: Will you tell us about your King Arthur novels you’re writing?

Tyler: Sure. The first book “King Arthur’s Legacy” will offer quite a unique retelling of the legend, incorporating some rather obscure medieval stories to draw new conclusions about what really happened at Camelot. My main character, Adam Delaney, lives in the modern period but discovers he is descended from King Arthur and learn the true story of what happened at Camelot. From there, in the three successive volumes, I will trace Arthur’s descendants across the ages from the sixth to twenty-first centuries, blending in several other European legends. I think readers will find it fun and epic both. My newest book “The Gothic Wanderer” just went on sale—it’s a study of nineteenth century British Gothic novels, and I mention it because some Gothic elements will work their way into my Arthurian novels as well. Visit my website for updates on the series.

Cari: Thank you, Tyler. I feel like I’ve learned a lot from reading “King Arthur’s Children” and talking to you today.

Tyler: Thank you, Cari. I feel we have to keep the dream of Camelot alive and keep talking about it, and people seem to be more interested in it than ever before so I hope I’ve helped to spur that interest a little.
I am so excited for the release of his novel, and any future Arthurian books.
I have really enjoyed working with Tyler. He has inspired me to study more in depth many legends. He has not only brought my interest in King Arthur back to the surface, but has inspired me to look at the other legends I have found myself loving over the years. I want to find Camelot and prove the legend to be true, even if I do live in my own version of the royal land.

I hope that you all pick up King Arthur's Children and read it. It is enlightening and refreshing. This is definitely a book that will stay in our family library. I cannot wait to teach the prince about King Arthur.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of the book from Modern History Press in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own, I really did enjoy the book.

Organizing The Seasons: Fall

As I've mentioned before, I LOVE fall! (I know, you are tired of hearing it.) The fall is when I am in superwoman mode. I get organized, make lists, play Martha, and get ready for winter.

September is a busy month for me, but I have started my to do list. We have been so busy this week wrapping up the summer, getting ready for the Prince's birthday, and starting school. My Mother will also be visiting next week, so there are preparations for that as well.

My to do list currently includes:

  1. Finish preparing for Mom's trip
  2. Sort toys- any that he has just outgrown will be stored for the future little ones, while those that are broken will be tossed. With his birthday at the end of the month, I want to make this an every year occurrence.
  3. Figure out a system for organizing toys. He has so many and they are taking over.
  4. Organize home school. We started this week, but I want to add another blog for our home school journey, and get all of my research and thoughts organized. Now, they are just scribbled on scrap papers.
  5. Start planning Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. It is a big job, and I am entirely too obsessed with organization to not plan now. I also want to make a list of the things I want to do with our son and accomplish for each holiday.
  6. Pick a spot for our house and start clearing the land :D I'm so excited we are going to build our cabin.
  7. Organize recipes for the season.
  8. Finish my blog plans for the season.
  9. Switch out summer and fall clothes.
  10. Plan the Prince's Fisher Price Play Date (more on this soon!)
I still feel like there is something I am forgetting to do - hopefully I will remember!
I will share with you as I have these accomplished. I'm hoping to have some printable up for you soon. I would love to hear your to do list and resources for accomplishing it all.

I also have some great reviews coming up!

I almost forgot to tell you something! The hubs and I got 2 new pups. They are American Boston Bull Terriers- and oh so pretty! I have been having so much spoiling my sweet baby bulldogs!

Because there are sickos who have not so noble intentions with bulldogs, I will only refer to our babies as His and Hers! You can see the rest of this gorgeous litter at Tokeena Bulldogs! These are family dogs, so I will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.

He looks like a guinea pig!

Her stripe is almost gone now!

Aren't they beautiful!

Southern Charm Sunday: Invitations

September marks the beginning of event season for me. This is when all those etiquette lessons my mother taught me get super charged. For the rest of the year, Southern Charm Sunday will revolve around events. I will share table settings, manners, lesson on being a great hostess, and lessons on being a great guest. We are starting off with invitation etiquette.

*Note on invitations: no need for really expensive custom stationary, I have used dollar store invitations before- it is all in the execution!*

Tips for writing invitations:

  1. Be sure the wording matches the event. You don't want to use formal language with a child's birthday, or vice versa.
  2. Be sure to include as many details as possible including event location, time, date, host, honorees, gift procedure and registry, and any other vital information. That being said, never include register information on a formal wedding invitation; instead, opt for an insert.
  3. Be sure to include contact information inside the invitation. (envelopes get tossed)
  4. Make sure you include a return address on the envelope.
  5. Specify if you require an RSVP and a deadline; as well as how to RSVP.
  6. If sending a reply card for RSVP, include a stamp- that is just good manners.
  7. Include a map to event location when possible.
  8. When possible, hand write addresses on envelopes (return address can be sticker) - it gives a more personalized experience and in the case of wedding etiquette it is bad etiquette.
  9. Send invitations well in advance to ensure ample planning time.

Tips for those receiving invitations:
  1. Always respond in the way designated by the invitation. This is to ensure that the host gets the RSVP.
  2. If a RSVP is requested and you intend to go, it is bad manners to not RSVP.
  3. Do not leave a response on a machine- only verify when speaking to the host. (unless otherwise stated)
  4. Changing a Yes to a No is only acceptable in a handful of circumstances- all of which are unavoidable. Some of these include: sickness, birth, injury, death, and unavoidable conflict. In the event of this, contact the host immediately. Never be a "no-show."
  5. Do not invite others along. If this is a plus-one event, the invitation will include that information. This also goes for children. If children are invited, the invitation will indicate that. If you have house guests at the time of the event, kindly decline the invitation. When you do this, state the reason- the host may decide to extend the invitation to your guests. Do not be offended if this does not occur.
  6. Thank the hosts. I cannot stress this enough. No matter the event a thank you should be extended. Thank them before you leave and again by phone or note the next day. That is just good manners. (This goes for the host as well. Thank your guests!)
That is The Palmetto Queen's invitation etiquette. When you follow etiquette, things go more smoothly. The planets align perfectly!

*Special Offer Alert*

Paper Coterie is offering a new incentive to new customers.

Easy and well worth it! They even offer custom invitations.

I hate being wasteful!

I'm the person that reuses what I can. I even write lists on the backs of used papers. My one guilty pleasure in the world of disposables is my paper planner- and it is my sanity. I would reuse plastic water bottles that are bought for the work cooler, except that is dangerous- so, yes they get thrown away. Vapur came to my rescue.

My son received this really awesome Vapur Quenchers (Just For Kids) a couple of weeks ago. He is absolutely obsessed with it. It even comes with stickers to customize it- what is more fun than stickers to a toddler?

Of course, it doesn't hurt that he LOVES water!

The prince received Bo, but Vapur is also releasing Fuse, Splash, and Lolli this fall. In 2013, there will even be customization on their site. I am already in love with this company. It doesn't hurt that they are so cute! Of course, they come in adult designs as well.

Some Features of The Vapur Anti-Bottle are:

  1. Flattens and rolls when empty for easy storage
  2. Reusable
  3. Freezable
  4. Environmentally friendly
  5. Amazing lid
  6. Durable construction
  7. Dishwasher safe
  8. BPA free
  9. Made in the USA
I will order more of these for many different purposes:
  • To keep in my purse/ car
  • Send an extra bottle with the hubby to work
  • Car trips- less trash
  • Running errands- when I empty it, I won't be carrying around my huge water bottle empty!
  • I know that as the monster gets older, I will have even more purposes for them like sports.
My FAVORITE discovery for Vapur Anti-Bottles: Apple Sauce
My son loves the squeezable apple sauce packs. I hate buying those because there is so much wasted packaging and they aren't as wallet friendly as a jar. I found that I can put apple sauce out of a jar (using a funnel) into the Vapur Anti-Bottle and he doesn't know the difference. I had previously only used the squeeze packs in the car, but now he can have squeeze apple sauce every day! This size is perfect for water, but I would love to see it in an even smaller size for alternate uses.

My Silly Boy

Vapur- you are doing an amazing thing and I cannot wait to see what products you come up with in the future, like other lunch packing alternatives.

Disclaimer: I received this product in exchange for my review. All opinions are my own and I would have bought my little one an anti-bottle and shared a review anyway!

My Summer Deadline is Almost Here!

At the beginning of the summer, I shared my summer bucket list. I have 12 days until the deadline; so, I thought I would revisit them and then share my fall bucket list with you!
  1. Lose 50 pounds.
  2. Have the prince completely potty trained. He's on his way- but there are still improvements to be made. (except for night time)
  3. Have the WHIRL Network up and running. This has been postponed until the first of 2013
  4. To not cut my hair (except for my bangs). I'm trying to grow it out, but I keep getting tempted to cut it.
  5. To have more defined business hours so that I can spend more time with my family.
  6. GET ORGANIZED (and record this journey) - still working on it
  7. Have my course planned so that I can teach it.

Fighting a Losing Battle or Am I Actually Making a Difference

I have been a lover of pit bulls for most of my life. For many many years now I have been trying every day to change the image that the world has of the beautiful, brave, and loving dogs.

This is Judge, who we recently lost, with my son
Not a day goes by that I don't share something to help change a mind or step up and say dog fighting and BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) are wrong. Some days I feel like I have actually changed a mind. Then, something like this happens.
Yes, that is a dog fight at a club. Yes, those are Heineken banners in the background. How can I make a difference when Heineken has a part in this.

At first, I thought, is this real? This picture is not photoshopped. What do I do? Well, naturally I take my frustrations to twitter.

Now, I should give you some insight to my past. I have worked with big brands like Heineken on events before. Venues have to sign contracts stating that their  branded items will not be used in conjunction with any other events. They even usually have a brand advocate on site to ensure that things like this do not happen and that proper protocol is used.

Now back to this issue. I have done research on this and found out some disturbing information. This started with my Google search for "is dog fighting legal in Mongolia." I was actually shocked by what it returned. The entire front page of the results were involving Heineken.

Not only did I find out that dog fighting is in fact legal in Mongolia, but I found some shocking news about Heineken. There are some odd "coincidences" that lead me to believe that Heineken did know about this dog fight BEFORE the event.

  1. The brewery/ distributor for this particular night club happens to be in the same town as the night club where the "event" took place.
  2. This was not a small event, it had international attendees and was advertised.
  3. This is not the first time Heineken has been called out by animal rights groups. They were also asked to justify their sponsorship for bullfights in Portugal in 2008.
  4. Heineken released a statement that the company  "is not and would never knowingly be associated with illegal activities, including those involving cruelty to animals." However, dog fighting is legal in Mongolia. This statement is useless Heineken.
Here is what I have concluded. I am still unsure about if I believe Heineken didn't sponsor the event- how many times have companies lied to cover their tracks. I am certain that they were aware of the event before it happened. I am also certain that they knew about it before the images reached social media.

I know that the damage to these dogs cannot be undone, but Heineken can make a difference. They can release a statement about dog fighting, not just this event. They can speak out against this cruelty and do something to make a difference. Do something to make those of us who fight for these dogs feel like our efforts are not being stomped by big companies like Heineken.

I may not be able to make a difference in the face of a company like them, but I will not give up until there are no more dog fights and no more cruelty. These are the images I want seen every day of Pit Bulls.

The breed's history as a family dog: Helen Keller had a pit bull. Laura Ingalls Wilder, who wrote "Little House on the Prairie," owned one, too.
