Time to Clean Those Backpacks!

So we are all stuck at home. Are you running out of things to do? I'm not but some people are bored. Over the weekend, I gave a much-needed cleaning to my kids' backpacks. Because they are homeschooled and do not use them every day, I've never cleaned them before and they've had them a couple years.

I had decided to clean them out and restock and noticed a stench. Yes, a scrunch your face up stench. I don't know where it came from, but it had to go! Even if there isn't a stench, why not clean them up and sanitize them now, while they aren't being used.

We had some rainy days, so I had to wait for the sun to come out and then I got busy. It is really simple to clean them, it just isn't something I think of doing often.

To start with, make sure everything is out of every pocket, leave all pockets unzipped, and turn the backpack inside out.

Then, run you some lukewarm water in the bathtub (I chose not to use the washer because they weren't really dirty and I didn't want them to lose shape, but you can use it on gentle). In that water, use laundry detergent and Odoban (Or, you can use vinegar- it neutralizes smells).

Put the backpack in the tub and let them soak a few minutes and then just hand wash them.

Then, change them outside in the sun to dry for a day- the sun is great at sanitizing too!

So simple and it made one happy girl!

Organized & Ready Travel

Are you as ready as I am to get out of the house? My kids have not left the house in almost 4 months since even before schools closed. They have immune issues, so we have taken all the measures we can. Although we homeschool and I work at home, things are still so strange.

We had to miss 2 major events we had been looking forward to- Jurassic World Live and a Home Free Concert with UVIP tickets. There are other events we had wanted to attend but hadn't gotten around to buying the tickets yet. We've missed treks to the park and the Stumphouse tunnel. We are even going to have to reschedule our yearly trip to the mountains during the first week of June. But you know what? My family is safe, happy, and healthy- that's what counts. Instead of getting down about it, I've been working on making sure we are organized and ready for some trips, even some last-minute ones.

I am a planner and in the past have needed a week to prep for a weekend trip. Well, I've taken steps so that if we decide one night that we will drive to the mountains the next morning for the weekend, I can roll with it. I'm sharing these steps with you!

1. The first thing I learned is to not stress. If I forget something, it's ok. I can run to the store and grab it - even if that is children's Tylenol or diapers. I can get it. It's not the end of the world!

2. Make a list and organize that list. Make a list of everything you need to pack and divide that into which bag it goes into. (kids' backpacks, your tote, or suitcase). Go ahead and include things that usually stay in your kids' backpacks (their adventure backpack) so you can make sure it is still there. Include things you need to pick up from the store like snacks and drinks. Make a list of things you need to do the night before and the morning of. Having lists will make things go more smoothly, help you not forget things, and give you a sense of calm.

My list is small pages that are tabbed. I have packing, to buy, the night before, the morning of, kids sleepovers, and hospital or emergency (I had to make this list to make me feel better after Tbomb's stay in the hospital.) I have placed the lists in my Happy Planner pocket. I can put whichever tabs I need facing the front and the back and use my wet erase if I choose to. (If I have more time to plan, I do space packing out and have the kids help me- last minute is quick and without kids)

I never could find printables that I liked and that were the right size, so I just drew my own.

3. Prepare for your next adventure when you return home. If I need to pick up any travel size items or anything else for travel, that I realize on a trip, I will add it to my shopping list when I get home. I pick it up next time I'm at the store and we are ready to go. The only thing we will need to pick up (usually on the way out of town) is some snacks and drinks! I actually use a small utility tote from Thirty-One gifts to put our snacks and drinks in, so that we are not carrying grocery bags- it just makes carrying our stuff in easier.

4. Make a rule - one trip from the car to the hotel room. This will cut down on items and luggage- especially with just a few days. The kids are responsible for their backpacks and sleeping bags.

5. I keep a toiletry case packed with our travel-sized toiletries. I keep it all on hand- even spare toothbrushes and hairbrushes and ties. I have travel size of everything that we use. It just makes things easier to not need to pack all of that too. I then just have to throw in my flat iron and we are good to go!

6. The kids' backpacks are a lifesaver for me. They are ready to go on an adventure always! Their tablet cases have battery packs, charging cables, and headphones- they just slip their tablets in. All they need is their snacks, water bottle, Koda's doll, and they are good to go. I do have a section of things on my packing list of things to add to their backpacks or check to make sure they are there- I don't want a trip with tablets and no headphones! (I will post about their backpacks another time).

7. Pack the whole family's clothes and toiletries in one bag. It makes sharing supplies, packing, unpacking and situating in a hotel room easier. For me, its just the best way to do it.

8. We all have a "travel bag," the kids have their backpacks, my husband has one for electronics like his switch and tablet as well as chargers, and I have my MOM BAG.

I usually carry a pretty big purse that is more like a tote (the leopard stripe one at the top) and I just add in the things on my list to it. If I'm not carrying a big purse, I just use a tote for this and add in things out of my purse. I also carry a small crossbody when we are traveling (this is a clear one when we have concerts and events). Then, I don't have to carry my huge purse as we are walking around.

I always have chargers, my electronics, medications, and carsick fixes in my bag, along with important things like their medical information.

9. The kids have their cute sleeping bags (mermaid and rocket ship) that they carry along on trips. In the car, they go under their feet with their backpacks. Then, they carry it into the hotel. They like having comforts from home, or they can't sleep, so this solves that problem, along with a lovey! (Koda's doll and usually an action figure for him).

10.  Have a standing shopping list. We always get the same sandwich and snack items for every trip. I have that list when I run in to get things and we are good to go. Some snacks we only get for travel and it gets the kids excited when they see them. I also always grab pretzels and gingerale for my carsick baby!

11. Take you time now and get organized. We're all stuck at home anyway. Get organized now for your next big adventure. I have and I'm so glad that I have.

Just As Good: Outdoor Tech Refurbished Items

Disclaimer: I received a product to review. All opinions are my own.

Sometimes I am not a fan of refurbished products. Sometimes they are obviously not as good as a new one. I was pleasantly surprised with Outdoor Tech's refurbished Kodiak Plus 2.0. Not only is it almost $30 cheaper than the "new" one. It charges wonderfully, keeps a charge, and charges our tech items great!

Also, I love the packaging. It comes in a zip lock bag with the Outdoor Tech logo all over it. Who doesn't love a zip baggie with bigfoot on it?! It also comes with the sticker, user manual, and charging cable, just like the other Outdoor Tech items do. There is also a Certified Refurbished guarantee included.

The Kodiak Plus 2.0 is a wonderful product that comes in red and black. It has a flashlight, battery indicator, dual charging, waterproof, dustproof, and shockproof. This is why I love Outdoor Tech. They are truly outdoor products. No matter our adventure, we can stay charged with no worries. Plus, if it gets thrown around in my purse, there is no worry.

When the tornadoes hit and we lost power, it was a lifesaver. We just kept it charged and we could keep the whole family charged and connected. We charged the Kodiak Plus 2.0 with the car and then charged our phones and tablets on it.

Something You Definitely Want: Buckshot 2.0

Disclaimer: I received a product to review. All opinions are my own.

By now you have figured out that I would marry my Outdoor Tech products if I could, although my husband wouldn't be too happy. (I think he loves them as much as I do though). I thought my life was complete, but I was wrong. I met Buckshot 2.0!

I am in love and my life is complete (until I find the next Outdoor Tech product that I absolutely need!). I just love this little speaker. Here are just a few reasons why!

  1. It is compact and easily fits in any bag I am carrying
  2. I can clip it on any pocket or the side of my bag to keep up with it.
  3. I can stand it up on the table
  4. I can put it on any tripod mount
  5. It charges quickly
  6. The battery lasts a while
  7. The sound is amazing
  8. It has a bigfoot on it.
  9. Shockproof, dustproof, waterproof
My family enjoys spending a lot of time outside, but we also love our music. We want to be able to listen, no matter where we are- in the yard, at the fire pit, in the car, by the pool, in the hotel, at the lake, on a hike, everywhere. I just make sure to bring the Buckshot 2.0 along and we are good to go. If I forget to charge it, I just plug it into my Kodiak Ultra and in no time it is ready to listen.

When the tornadoes came through about a month ago and tore up my hometown, our power was out for about a week. When we needed to listen to the presidents' pressers, the governors' decisions about our town, and even music, we were good to go. We were all able to listen without having to be right on top of my phone.

Another thing that I love about the Buckshot 2.0 is that I can use it in our bigfoot research, as well as paranormal investigations. For bigfoot research, I can put it on a flexible tripod and wrap it around a tree branch. It has a 60-foot range, allowing me to put it deeper in the woods and play recordings of bigfoot and other animals, to see if we can get a response. If I record callbacks on my phone, I can also use the Buckshot 2.0 to play them for the team and at events.

In paranormal investigations, I can use it to playback evidence I catch and at times even use it to play "trigger sounds," to see if we get a reaction.

Poolside, parkside, trailside, beachside, or rolling a dozen deep with your scooter gang, the Buckshot is a small Bluetooth speaker that brings savage sound from a tiny package. Nothing measures up to the Buckshot speakers' ultra-portable, tougher-than-you-are rugged design, and with the Buckshot 2.0, we're pretty much leaving the industry with its shirt pulled over its head, nose bloody, wallet missing. Pretty unfair if we're honest, but hey, we aren't saying sorry. This mini sonic boom can ride shotgun on your pack, strapped to your handlebars as a bike speaker, your ski pole, your wingsuit, or the roof of your car, even if that makes no sense. That's not the point. The point is you can take this small Bluetooth speaker, and your soundtrack, wherever you go. And that's dope.

Don't you need a Buckshot 2.0 in your life? #StuffYouProbablyWant

Carson-Dellosa For The Win in 2020-2021

Disclaimer: I received products to review. All opinions are my own.

We will be making many changes to Owl Creek Academy for the following year. These changes are slowly being made so that we are ready and organized when it is time for school to start in the fall. It is also giving me an insight as to what will work and what will definitely not work.

One thing I will point out about the changes we are making is that my daughter is special needs. She has some developmental disorders, major speech delays, as well as some other issues that affect her schooling. My son is ADHD and we do not medicate. This demands a lot of effort to make sure he gets enough activity and does not get too excited. All of these things require additional planning on my part and Carson-Dellosa has helped me immensely with this.

Carson-Dellosa has sent me some items to help my kids stay on track and keep my homeschool organized with the different needs of each of my children. I will also be using a few grade-level resources to keep up on track with learning goals. This will also allow our homeschool to have a much more relaxed flow and allow us to study and build on more of the things that interest the kids, while still learning what they need to for their grade.

1. Communication Folder

Key Education Publishing® Communication Folder TeacherI have a folder for each child and these have already been a game-changer in our little school. The pocket on the front is great for reminding them what is next and teaching them to be accountable for their progress in the day. The inside cover pocket is wonderful for reminders and for keeping track of our goals (like writing neatly). The first page is a sheet protector and works wonderfully for reference sheets- I can put two here. The pockets behind that are great for daily work or for things they are still working on.

2. Essential Tips & Tools: Inclusion
Key Education Publishing® Essential Tips & Tools: Inclusion Teacher
Since my days as an Elementary Education Major, I have been enamored by inclusion materials. In high school, I was a teachers' aid for a special needs class and helped run an after school program for remedial students at the elementary school in the area. Now, having a special needs child of my own, I feel that having the materials to help students stay organized and on track, no matter their abilities is of the utmost importance, even in homeschool.

This resource has reproducible, dry erase pages, tips, and games to help your classroom run more smoothly, and keeping the special needs students right there with the others.

3. Colorful File Folder Games- Grade 1

Carson-Dellosa Colorful File Folder Games, Grade 1 TeacherMy son was never a fan of File Folder Games. However, my daughter loves them and will do them no matter the subject. I knew I wanted to include File Folder Games for her. She can do these on her own and they help to reiterate lessons. They also give me a chance to do some one-on-one work with my son. She is a very hands on learner and needs to do several activities for a concept to sink in. These file folder games are going to be a huge plus for us next year. The book has all the papers you need- just construct them with file folders you already have and laminate if you wish. I have started getting them put together and I'm so happy with them!

4. First Grade Sight Words

Sight words are something my daughter struggles with. She's an ace at math, but remembering the words and even sounding them out prove challenging for her. I think part of it may be related to her speech issues. I'll take all the help I can get with sight words, including this Sight Word Workbook. There are word games, trace & write, sentences & stories, hidden pictures, flash cards, and more to help drive those sight words home. She did well learning her alphabet this way, so I have faith that this sight word book is going be the ticket!

5. Comprehensive Curriculum of Basic Skills- Grade 1, Grade 4

Thinking Kids® Comprehensive Curriculum of Basic Skills, Grade 4 ParentI was looking for a workbook that would cover ELA and math to keep us on track. If they get the concept, we move on. If not, we'll work on it longer and expand on it. If it is something the kids are interested in, we will expand on it. Mostly, it will keep us on track. My son is not a fan of worksheets, but my daughter thrives on them. This will keep the worksheets to a manageable amount for my son, without having 20 pages of a concept that he gets easily. We are very excited to use this for our basis of ELA and math this year!

6. English & Grammar Grade 4

Brighter Child® English & Grammar Workbook, Grade 4 ParentMy son is a phenomenal reader and loves to write stories. However, grammar is not a strong point for him, mostly because he does not want to put the effort in to it, so he just wants to do it and get it done, without actually learning it. This worksheet is going to be wonderful for him with quick lessons. I think I'll have him do a lesson and then work that lesson into his writing. I think the idea of tying a worksheet into his writing is going to be the key for him. I'm very excited to get him started in this workbook!

My Newest Love: Mantas True Wireless Earbuds

Disclaimer: I received a product to review. All opinions are my own.

Soo... I'm not a fan of earbuds because they tend to make my ears hurt. I'm also not a fan of around-ear headphones because my earrings get in the way and they make my ears hurt. Also, I can't just sit around and listen to music. I have to do things and headphones keep me tethered.

I finally found the perfect solution! The Mantas True Wireless Earbuds from Outdoor Technology are heaven-sent. I can wear them however I need them because they go around the outside of your ear, keeping them in place.

True Wireless Earbuds

The Mantas earbuds stream wireless audio from your phone, computer, tablet, and just about any other Bluetooth device. These are True Wireless earbuds so there are no cables anywhere. Our athlete-inspired design and engineering have enabled perfect sound, sweat resistance, and an ultra-light, super comfortable, no-slip fit. The 12-hour playtime gives you plenty of time for your workout, bike ride, or run.

Top 5 Features:
Mantas True Wireless Earbuds Features
  • 12-hour playtime.
  • Ergonomic fit with all-day comfort.
  • Tap button controls.
  • Dual and single earbud capability.
  • No wires.

Another thing I really love about the Mantas is that I can use just one of them and still have one ear available for the kids (because as soon as I start listening to music, they need something). I can also share them. I've been letting my Mother-in-law use one since I only wear one at a time anyway.

The sound quality is absolutely amazing and I love that I can be away from my phone and still be able to hear my music. Another plus for me (because I forget to charge everything) is that because they charge with a micro USB, I can use a battery pack to charge them, or just about any other charger I have with me!

Owl Creek Academy: Oh How We've Grown

Owl Creek Academy Started with a 2-year-old 7 years ago. He and I sat on the floor and learned letters together, then we learned the sounds together. Every day there was learning about other things as well, especially geography and science. He still loves science. A few years later, we had a more formal school. Sitting at the kitchen table, we use worksheets and textbooks. We learn what the standards require each year. The older Tbomb gets, the less this works.

We now have 2 students that both love to learn. Snapper still loves worksheets, but she is also very hands-on and is a wonderful problem solver.

The way we've been doing school is ok, but not wonderful. It leaves us with the want to do more. We want more hands-on impromptu learning, like what we used to do. When a question is asked, we run with it instead of having to say. "Well, let's finish the worksheet, and then we will look that up."

Learning happens all the time and should not be squashed by the need to complete a set of demands. My kids love learning and are interested in everything. We are changing things up for next year so that we do not continue in this rut and it ends up killing my kids' love of learning.

We will still have some worksheets, to make sure we stay on track for reading, grammar, math, and things like that. The workbook will be the foundation that we will build on- instead of everything being a worksheet, we will have a couple a day and it will be more about me making sure they understand it than it will weather they can finish the worksheet or not.

The biggest change will be for writing, social studies, and science. I have a list of topics and instead of having them planned out with worksheets, we will be learning how to research and exploring each topic ourselves. It is important that kids learn to learn and learning to research is part of that.

We will also be using our Kindle Fires in homeschool next year. We have not done this before, I've even made sure that we had hard copies of the books we were reading. No more. (In fact, I gave the classics away and purchased them on Kindle). I have found amazing apps that are globes, dictionaries, and so much more that we will use. They will be handy and learning can happen all over instead of just at the kitchen table with textbooks. Also, now when they want to know about a country, they look at it on their Fires instead of not wanting to pull out the maps.

I've been preparing our supplies for next year, but the only changes I've implemented for the kids are the changes to their Fires and so far, they are loving it. Every day, they tell me something they have learned from one of the apps I've installed.

I'll be updating as I finish more preparations, but I will leave you with one question that I asked myself just today: Does a child learn more about a squirrel from reading about them, putting food out for them, and observing them, or from answering questions on a worksheet?

Mine were very excited to hang the squirrel feeder after we read an article about them today!
