Movie Review: Paul: Apostle of Christ

Disclaimer: I received a copy of the movie to review. All opinions are my own.

The hubby and I are movie buffs. Because we have turned off our satellite in favor of streaming and DVDs (too much junk on the channels and too much money for how often we watch), our littles have turned into movie buffs as well. We have been making a real effort to find movies (not cartoons) that are appropriate for the whole family- most of the time that is easier said than done.

Paul: Apostle of Christ (Sony Pictures) has changed that. It has become a family lesson. Tbomb loves it and loves asking questions. His favorite thing to do is read the Bible and discuss it- this movie is perfect for that! Koda doesn't quite follow along and gets bored, but she is only 4- however, she is learning from the discussion. This movie is definitely a winner for our family!

What an amazing movie!

Paul (Faulkner), who goes from the most infamous persecutor of Christians to Christ’s most influential apostle, is spending his last days in a dark and bleak prison cell awaiting execution by Emperor Nero. Luke(Caviezel), his friend and physician, risks his life when he ventures into Rome to visit him. Paul is under the watchful eye of Mauritius (Martinez), the prison's prefect, who seeks to understand how this broken old man can pose such a threat. But before Paul's death sentence can be enacted, Luke resolves to write another book, one that details the beginnings of "The Way" and the birth of what will come to be known as the church. Their faith challenged an empire. But their words changed the world.

Thirty-One Gifts Summer Prints

Disclaimer: I received items to review. All opinions are my own.

When it is time for summer to come around, I get excited and start planning some fun new organizing projects. I have more time on my hands and I'm able to tackle projects and get us organized for trips, as well as the coming school year. I also get excited to see what Thirty-One has up their sleeve. This year, I was so excited when I saw the fun new prints! The unicorns for Koda, Sharks for Tbomb, Fireworks for me, and campers for my Mother-In-Law!

The wheels started turning and when I saw the fabulous products with these prints, I knew what to do.

Koda and Tbomb got unicorn and shark cinch sacs to keep them organized when we are out of our normal routine. Turned out to be just what we needed for when they spent the night with their great-grandparents for the Mr and I to see Home Free at the Peace Center. What a fun night and I was able to send everything they needed and the things they wanted.

With my mother-in-law going through cancer treatments and having the health problems she does, she has to keep certain medications very handy. The camper bin is perfect for this!

There are so many fun products with these fabulous prints. They are a definite must-have for the year- and will be handy when the kids venture back to school!

These are my favorite of the new summer products. Koda got the unicorn, Tbomb got the shark, and my Mother-In-Law got the watermelon!

She uses hers for snacks and candy during chemo- the things that help ease her tummy.

The kids do not leave the house without theirs. I love that I can put a hot sandwich, cold fruit, yogurt, lose snacks, several small snacks, and so much more in them. These are the best of the reusable snack bags I have come across and I could not imagine life without them now. They are a sanity saver!

In fact, last week, Koda had hives. We couldn't figure out why and she had them for 5 days. Everywhere we went, I had to carry prescription Zyrtec, Benadryl, hydrocortisone cream, and a cold pack- these cool zip snackers were a life saver for keeping everything handy and cool!

Get Organized For next School Year: More Tips

There are a ton of things you can do now to ensure you are ready and raring to go for the upcoming school year- you will be organized on the outside, even if you don't feel like you are ready on the inside. Over the past several years of homeschooling, I have found a few things that really help me get ready and stay organized throughout the year.

1. Get your routine in place: This goes for you and your kids. Not only should your kids have a daily routine, but you should have a daily and weekly routine for yourself. Know what you need to do every day, week, and month to stay on top of the game. While a simple list will probably suffice for you, these routine pocket charts are perfect for the kiddos.

2. Share Your Plan: Let those closest to you (grandparents, husband, aunts/ uncles, etc) know when you will be starting school and what the schedule is like. This way, they know when your kids will be in school- grandparents won't just show up asking to play with the kids.

3. Make A Plan: What happens if, for some reason, dad or someone else has to take over the school for a day or a few days? Create a folder with routines, morning time, where to find things, etc. Also, let them know where the days' lessons are. These substitute folders from Carson-Dellosa Publishing help keep everything together and organized for impromptu days with a substitute teacher. (There are several different designs, I just love the Aim High line). This can also serve as a reminder spot if your kiddos need to be taken to activities outside the home.

4. Get the kids organized for learning away from home. We keep the kids backpacks always ready to go. When we have appointments or somewhere to be, I can just slide a folder with worksheets and any books they need and we are ready to go. We keep supplies, paper, and a "desk" in it all the time- though I'll be switching to storage clipboards soon. This makes things so much simpler because there is no grabbing supplies at the last minute and the kids already know where everything is. Either a pocket folder or file folder works for this. When it isn't being used, the file folder storage pockets are a perfect place to keep them handy!

5. Decide how you will track progress. Whether you are testing, using assessments, or just tracking progress, decide now what you will do to track what your student is learning. Choose your portfolio/ journal type as well and keep it up through the school year. These data tracking items from Carson-Dellosa could be a huge help!

Get Organized For Next School Year: Morning/ Group Activities

Disclaimer: I received products to use in this post. All opinions are my own.

I have found that morning work is a great time to work in lessons that either last all year (time/ date/ money/ etc), that are built on, and that are great for both kids. During our morning time, we work on our calendar, basic money, time, routines, Spanish, sign language, yoga, and more. This is also when we do our devotional.

I created a "portable bulletin board" out of a shipping envelope and that is what we use for our calendar because we do not have a designated "school room." It works perfectly. I lean it against our tabletop pocket chart, which is what we use for our other morning lessons. I love seeing the kids learn together and I have noticed that when Tbomb helps Snapper, she gets it easier, and he is more eager to learn more.

For some reason, the order of the days of the week and the months is something even Tbomb struggles with, so this is something great to work on during morning time, as well as patterns. Time and money is something that is always great to review. I love using our "morning meeting" as a review time. Plus, it helps Snapper along.

All of these items come in an amazing bulletin board set from Carson-Dellosa Publishing. It also includes money, charts, lots of numbers, calendars, and so much more. This is the ULTIMATE calendar set. It is the "Morning Meeting Solution Bulletin Board Set" and is available on carsondellosa.com. There is also a similar set that has resources for preschool and kindergarten.

Once you have the basics of your morning meeting/ group time, you can work other lessons in. This is a great time to tackle social skills, health, basic foreign language, and so much more. As you are working on finishing up your planning, keep this in mind- it may help free up room for other lessons as well- especially if it is something all of your kids will benefit from. That is why our morning time is one of the first things I get planned out.

Organizing For Next School Year: Planning Your Homeschool Year

Disclosure: I received items to use in this post. All opinions are my own.

By now, I'm sure you have a basic outline of what will be taught in the coming year. You probably have many of your materials. You are probably waiting for a few materials and working out the details of the school year to come. Getting those materials and details worked out can be a daunting task, but staying organized is the key to it all.

Obviously, a to-do list is the first thing you need. This list from Carson-Dellosa is my favorite for planning. It is from the Aim High Line and absolutely adorable. I love this entire line- it just makes me happy!

Sitting down to make out a to-do list is probably one of the most important steps of this process. If you write it down, you will remember to do it and mark it off when you finish. One thing that I really like about this list is that I can organize what I need to do and it isn't jumbled all in one list.

This also works for specific projects and lessons. Say, you are planning a big lesson on place value that is going to take a couple weeks. Put your materials in a file folder or manilla envelope and then staple, tape, or paperclip the list to the front. Then, when you are working on that lesson, you can easily see what needs to be done. You can even change the heading to to-do, print, assemble, research, etc.

I find gathering materials, worksheets, and other items and keeping them organized to be a difficult task in the planning stages. Once it is all planned, everything is organized by week. However, keeping up with it until done is a different story. I have finally found a solution.

Carson-Dellosa Publishing sells these amazing sets that are file folder pockets with the file folders. We are Owl Creek Academy, so I went with the owls set and used zip ties to attach it to our crates that store books. It is hanging right above where our everyday school bag stays, so it is easy to access.

While I am planning school, the folders are organized by 2 admin, 2 Tbomb, 2 Snapper. They each have one folder for lessons and one folder for their workbook. It works great for seeing what I already have and then organizing it into weekly folders in the file bins for each kid.

After school starts, this will be used a little differently- I will put in things I need easy access to, manipulatives, charts, and other items that we need during the school day, but not every day.

This will likely be used as part of our morning time too- easy access to morning work, clocks, and calendars.

Getting organized now will not only help you through the planning process and last prep before school starts, but it will also get you in the habit before school even starts for an amazing and organized school year.

I'd love to hear your tips for getting and staying organized for the school year!

Organizing For Next School Year: Your Calendar

Disclaimer: I received items to include in this post. All opinions are my own.

In my planning process, getting my calendar in order is something that must happen first. I have to know days we need to take off, holidays, and even events I want to include as field trips. I go ahead and choose a start date and potential end date. These dates are marked in my main calendar first.

Stickers and color-coding are a must for me. I can easily spot important dates, to-dos, and things I have to remember. Color coding also helps me spot those super important days. Dates that paperwork is due for school are in orange. Community dates (possible attendance) are in red, and appointments that I have to be at (mine or the kids) are in pink. I can easily look at my calendar and see what is going on. In addition to this, my MIL's appointments are always in yellow so I can be sure I am available.

These stickers help to bring special attention to specific dates, as well as mark school milestones. I use these awesome Aim High Planner Accent Stickers from Carson-Dellosa Publishing specifically for school purposes. This way, I can be sure to set those things apart, plus they are just beautiful. I can use these in my plan book as well, which makes them even more perfect.

While you are getting your calendar all set up, I suggest you go ahead and more tentative breaks and any vacation days you want to take. I try to make these with the holidays in mind because my husband usually takes some time off work, so we can have family time and do some fun stuff.

Another thing I like to go ahead and do now is schedule appointments. I like to get my appointments for at least the rest of the year set instead of waiting until a month before. For instance, the kids' dentist appointments and eye doctor appointments are already set for August and December. Before school starts back, I'll also have a developmental pediatrician, specialists, and probably an allergist scheduled for Snapper. This helps me plan ahead and we do not have to struggle that week.

I hope the way I set up my calendar helps you out a little. I'd love to hear your tips for managing your calendar and schedule during the homeschool year.
