10 Things To Know About Using Cast Iron Cookware

When I was first learning how to cook, I was nervous to use my mom's cast iron cookware- she had everything you could even imagine. I knew that they had been special gifts from my dad over the years and that they were very important to her. There was also a list that seemed to be about a mile long about how to care for them and what I could and could not cook in them. I was scared to touch them.

There were also many good memories with these pieces. We had an old Benjamin Franklin wood stove and when we would have a storm that would knock the power out, mom would make dinner, usually soup in her cast iron dutch oven, on that old wood stove. We would also use it with mom's cast iron popcorn popper on movie nights.

Well, after I moved out, mom gave me most of her cast iron and even added a few new pieces to the set. Now, I love to cook with cast iron and love making memories with my family with these special items.

Over the years, I have learned some things about caring for cast iron and what might as well be dubbed old wives tales.

1. You can cook tomato based foods in cast iron. My mom always said: whatever you do, do not cook tomato based foods in it. I cook my spaghetti sauce in cast iron all the time- just don't let it sit in it too long. After it is finished, go ahead and pour it into a bowl.

2. You can wash it between seasonings. Just dry it with a towel and put it away- it isn't good to let it air dry. I will admit, though, it could make a difference what you use to clean it with. I use original Dawn, so I'm not sure what other detergents and soaps will do. Although you can wash it, usually wiping with a paper towel will do the trick (I don't do this because we cook a lot of game meat and I'm too paranoid about making someone sick)

3. If it is rusted, it's ok. Iron can almost always be restored. Clean it well, even use a scouring pad if needed and season it. You can also use baking soda to clean the rust off.

4. Seasoning: There are many options. However, the best option or most households is to use a cooking "lard," like Crisco. Coat the pay/ pot with the oil/ lard that you choose - but use it sparingly. Then, bake it in an oven of 400 degrees for about an hour. You should be good to go. There are many different ways to do this, this just happens to be the way I do it.

5. When you cook with iron, you do get a little extra iron in your diet.

6. Cast Iron cookware will last your lifetime and make an amazing family heirloom.

7. Cast iron retains heat really well, distributes heat evenly, and is the most non-stick pan you will find.

8. A single cast iron skillet will allow you to fry, saute, simmer, bake, and more. You can use it on a stove, in an oven, and on a fire.

9. The more you use cast iron, the better it performs, the better it flavors your food, and the better you get at it.

10. Cast Iron may be intimidating, but with practice, you will get it- just cook to your heart's content- try bacon or french fries first.

I hope these tips helps you brave the world of Cast Iron. Do you have tips you would like to share?

Book Review: A Baby's Guide To Surviving

Disclaimer: I received a copy of A Baby's Guide to Surviving Dad in order to facilitate my review. All opinions are my own.

My favorite baby shower gift has always been books. Since I was in high school, if I went to a baby shower, I had a book in tow. It was usually accompanied by something for mom (or dad)- either for pampering or something fun. Now that I am a mother myself, I still take books, but they are usually along with very useful items for baby- something I have found makes my life much easier. I have now found the perfect second book for a baby shower. From now on, my gift will consist of a classic children's book, a favorite baby item, and a copy of A Baby's Guide to Surviving Mom (or Dad)!

A Baby's Guide to Surviving Mom

A Baby's Guide to Surviving Dad

A Baby's Guide to Surviving Mom and A Baby's Guide To Surviving Dad, (Capstone Pub), by Benjamin Bird, is the perfect gift book for new or expecting parents.

You see, because mom and dad don't get an instruction manual when baby is born, they are winging it. Guess what- this means that baby needs to survive this. They need the Baby's Guide To Surviving! The very first survival guides for infants and toddlers is a must have!

These books are super duper adorable. My husband and I laughed our way through A Baby's Guide To Surviving Dad. It had us laughing so much, I had kept it ready for rough days. I have since passed it on to a mom who was having a rough time adjusting to life as a mom. Even the guide for dads had her laughing.

Ultimate Mom Bag: #TickalishDiaperBag + Discount

Disclaimer: I received this bag to review. However, all opinions are my own and I truly love it!

This Tickalish Diaper Bag (Read to the end for a huge discount) is seriously the ultimate mom bag. I'm loving it and cannot wait to use it as my purse when we are in Florida in April. I generally carry my purse and each kid has a backpack (change of clothes, necessities, diapers, toys, etc). However on day trips and vacation, I carry a different bag, which I never was happy with, so I can keep up with everything I need without having to worry about getting their bags out of the car. That way, their backpacks do not get lost- because that would be a nightmare. I have searched and searched for the right bag and finally found it. Tickalish- you have done it.

This bag has a ton of awesome features that make it perfect or moms, even if you no longer carry an actual diaper bag. The wipes pocket on the end also fits those mega packs of antibacterial wipes (Wet Naps), that I go nowhere without. The Bottle insulator pouch can also be used for thermoses of soup, bottles of cold water, and even milk. If you are not carrying any of those- use it for toys, snacks, first aid, and any number of other things. The bag is very spacious and can easily accommodate the whole family.

The inside of the bag has a ton of pockets as well. The outside has pockets, an end pocket perfect for mom's extra large thermos of coffee or water bottle, and even a pocket that a standard size folder can fit in (perfect for doctor's office paperwork, tickets, and even our nature books that we carry on vacation and day trips). There are actually 12 pockets total, keeping you beautifully organized. Of course, I'm sure you've read my post on the many uses of changing mats- so you know how I feel about an extra changing mat!

The stripes on the bag are called red, but they look a little more rose to me. However, my MIL said red, so it is probably because I'm more prone to like pink, so that's what I see- whereas, she likes red. The gray straps and cords are a great compliment to the colors. It is easy to clean and very sturdy- it will stand the test of time.

The features of this bag are truly amazing. There are short straps for carrying it in your hand or on your arm, a long strap for shoulder carrying, with a padded addition. Unclasp the long strap and click the short straps become universal stroller hooks. Seriously, Tickalish thought of everything!

If you have kids (or a husband) that you still keep up with things for, this is the bag for you! Even if you don't and you just like a big purse, it makes a beautiful option!

I also have a special surprise for you! With the launch of this bag, there is a special discount. For a limited time, you can get the bag for just $15. How? Just email info@tickalish.com and ask for the discount code! Easy Peasy!

The Gibbes Museum of Art Reviving Art Education in Lowcountry

Newly renovated museum to serve as educational hub for students

CHARLESTON, S.C., February 17, 2016 – While art programs are often the first to be affected by school budget cuts, one organization is leading the charge to ensure art education is preserved and promoted in the Lowcountry. Reopening May 28 after extensive renovations, The Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston believes that discovering, understanding and appreciating original works of art from cultures past and present is a vital part of a complete education. This mission is manifest year-round in both museum-based and in-school programs to revive art in schools. The newly renovated museum will allow the Gibbes to reach thousands of students year-round and facilitate more onsite educational opportunities.

“Decades of studies reveal that effective arts education promotes self-directed learning, sharpens critical thinking skills, develops self-awareness and improves school attendance,” said Rebecca Sailor, curator of education at the Gibbes. “Through these programs, the Gibbes provides a cultural experience by connecting artists and museum educators, the creative process and works of art to stimulate dialogue and innovation.”

One such program is called Junior Docents, in which middle school students from Ashley Hall, Charleston Day School and Charleston Collegiate are trained by museum educators to become docents. At the semester’s end, students present museum works through guided tours to younger students. “From public speaking to critical thinking, the Junior Docent program encompasses a range of necessary skills students will need to be successful,” said Andy Willits, middle school head at Charleston Day School. “The program offers an experiential form of learning, and the students develop a great sense of ownership. We are fortunate to have the opportunity of utilizing one of Charleston’s cultural icons, the Gibbes Museum of Art.” The museum plans to expand Junior Docents to additional public and private schools in the coming years.

Other art education programs led by the Gibbes Museum include:

Create a Map Kit: An interactive classroom experience combining geography, art, history, mapping skills and teamwork. Working in teams to create a 3-D map of South Carolina, students place materials from the kit onto a gridded cloth to define cities, rivers, state symbols and more.

Art to Go: Teaching Artists at the Gibbes work with schools and their art educators to aid with specific art projects to enhance an established curriculum.

Eye Spy: Museum educators work with elementary school students over the course of a year to enhance their understanding of art history and the elements of art using the Gibbes’ collection and other major works of art.

Art Access: Title I students across Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties are invited to tour the museum at no cost.

Eye Opener: Museum educators connect with students and teachers in Engaging Creative Minds schools to develop and implement a learning vision using the visual arts to expand the classroom learning process.

Studio Classes: Classes ranging from painting to drawing are offered for various ages by established, practicing artists.

GSI EXCHANGE WANTS TO MAKE A WINNER OUT OF YOU! GSI Exchange $10 Gold Coin Giveaway

gold giveaway.png

Gold has been a symbol of wealth for centuries.  Gold is a high-quality, liquid asset that can be used to protect global purchasing power, reduce portfolio volatility and minimize losses during periods of financial and economic crisis.  Investors recognize gold’s lack of correlation with other assets to diversify their portfolios and hedge against currency risk.
Investors have several ways to add precious metals to a diversified investment portfolio.
Bullion coins are minted from precious metals, usually gold or silver, and bought for investment purposes from major banks, coin dealers, brokerage firms, and precious metal dealers.  Their value is based on their gold or silver bullion content.  Prices fluctuate daily, depending on the price of gold and silver in the world markets.
Whether you are planning for retirement, worried about inflation or simply looking to diversify your investments with a tangible physical asset, precious metals are known to hold value even during the most challenging financial times.
Concerns about falling oil prices, slower growth in China and other economic factors have contributed to a sharp decline in the stock markets to start the New Year, but Gold has been a bright spot to an otherwise gloomy financial forecast.   On Thursday, February 11, 2016, gold jumped $53.20 an ounce to $1,247.80, the highest price since February 2015 and an 18 percent jump since the start of 2016.
GSI Exchange’s main focus is to offer the highest-quality silver, gold, palladium and platinum coins at the most competitive prices.
GSI Exchange is an industry leader with a reputation for having better prices, better inventory, and better buybacks than other investment companies. With more than $1 billion in commodities and precious metals transactions around the world and membership with the prestigious Industry Council for Tangible Assets (ICTA), the American Numismatic Association (ANA), Professional Coin Grading Systems (PCGS), and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC), GSI Exchange offer clients a complete range of customized precious metals portfolios and unique “Physical Possession” precious metals IRAs (Individual Retirement Accounts).

Film While Doing Anything With The #PineapplePack

Disclaimer: I received a product to review. All opinions are my own.

As many of you know, I'm not just a mom, blogger, and business owner. I have quite the unique and adventurous favorite past-times. I love to do bigfoot research and paranormal investigations. As part of this, I also do a youtube channel (Paranormal Sass) where I document my adventures. One problem I have had in the past is getting the right angles with my GoPro, while still being able to have the other gear I need to investigate. Thanks to the PineapplePack ($89.95), I no longer have this problem.

The PineapplePack not only allows you to film yourself during whatever activity you choose, but also has enough room to store all of your gear and the features to keep your back comfortable during your adventure.

With the camera mount (that can be removed, stored, or used as a selfie stick), you can film yourself, your group, behind you, or even above you. I like to use it to see the things that I may miss while on an expedition. It is also sturdy enough that I can attach my IR lights and other night time gear to it.

Some other unique features-

  • The Selfie Stick is made of Aluminum Alloy that can attach a GoPro, Smartphone and any Camera with a tripod mount.
  • The PineapplePack gives you the option to attach any type of gear, such as a sleeping bag, on any side of the backpack (sides, bottom, front, etc.).
  • No more loose straps with our Velcro strap rollers. Adjust as you need and roll them back up for a smooth trip without worrying about straps getting caught on something or even slapping you in the face.
  • The PineapplePack is the perfect backpack to take on your adventures around the world or even for everyday use around town.
  • This backpack isn't made for Watersport, but is water resistant from rain.
  • 5 Pockets, Velcro Strap Rollers/adjustable straps, Aluminum Alloy Selfie Stick that comes with GoPro Mount and Smartphone mount, Waist and Chest Strap, Bottom, Side and Front Straps to Attach any Extra Gear Needed
Besides the ability to film, my favorite features are the pockets. the pocket thathold the housing for the camera mount can also be used to hold tripods, mounts, and other filming gear. The pockets on the sides are perfect for smaller items- I use one for batteries and battery packs and the other for different types of lights. There are two small pockets on the front that are great for tiny items like adapters, personal items, or emergency items. The large pocket has a mesh pocket on the flap and a laptop pocket on the back that is padded. It is large enough for all my gear. In fact, if I limit my investigation/ filming items, I could hike for several days with this pack. It will be perfect when we hike the Appalachian Trail this summer.

You can see why I love it with these pictures:

A New Year with Kristin Sheffer

As the New Year swiftly approaches, millions of New Year’s Resolutions will be made worldwide. A great starting point for a new attitude, new goals and life changing events. Unfortunately, most goals go untouched once the burst of new motivation fades away. Resulting in the typical “New Year’s Resolution Pattern.”

Life Coach & Entrepreneur Kristin Sheffer finds this a sad reality. “It takes more than willpower to accomplish one's goals. Strategy, accountability, and discipline are the ingredients to long-term success. ” She states.

Equipping and encouraging the everyday woman to find her purpose and walk passionately in it, is the mission of Simply Free, Kristin’s Personal Development business. Through leading clients through her unique process, she teaches them the art of Personal Management (which targets areas such as conquering self-doubt) always resulting in her clients achieving those seemingly unattainable goals.

**KRISTIN SHEFFER CAN SPEAK ON THE FOLLOWING TOPICS**

How to overcome body image issues

Kristin leads you to a place of self-acceptance by teaching you how to “become friends with your body.” This provides a mental break from measuring one's self against what is considered the acceptable form of “beauty”. You quickly realize your body is not the enemy, but your most trusted ally. This positive shift results in a healthier lifestyle, knowing your body is working for you not against you.

Combating Self Doubt

Kristin turns self-doubt into self-fulfillment. Self-doubt is a habitual choice that turns into a cancer preventing a person from experiencing their utmost self. This results in playing it safe and the loss of achieving ones fulfilling purpose. Her unique method erases the base ingredient of “fear” in self-doubt eliminating the cancer that stops a person from being who they were destined to be.

How to combat toxic thought patterns

Kristin brings a new approach to “positive thinking.” Within her coaching sessions, she dissects the root of the subconscious thought pattern and creates a road map that frees the victim from destructive patterns operating in the background of their life.

How to be honest with yourself

Kristin educates on how self-honesty will transform a person’s self-worth by providing the ability to improve areas previously hidden by self-deception. Being honest is the key ingredient to recognizing your weakness’s. By coaching you to re-define “weakness” from a negative to a positive, she helps you turn your flaws into strengths. Resulting in a perfected “YOU.”

About Kristin Sheffer

Kristin offers several different coaching options to meet various individual needs. If clients are unable to commit to in-person coaching, they take advantage of one of her online programs. Her newest program called The Purpose Project is launching in January, arriving just in time for individuals who want to become the best versions of themselves in 2016. In this 21-day program, clients are walked through a process that will identify and eliminate the needless distractions that are preventing that person from finding desired success. Leaving a clear-headed, motivated, inspired mind and armed with an action plan to carry that inspiration out.

Kristin also has a new book called Selfless Development: How to Find Your Purpose. Selfless Development is the roadmap to finding personal freedom. She restores simplicity to life’s more complex concepts gently reminding clients not to be so overwhelmed. The book gives practical action steps to take to jumpstart this journey and begin achieving instant clarity, energy, contentment, and joy. This book, used in conjunction with The Purpose Project maximizes the individual’s transformative experience.

Kristin Sheffer would be a great personality to interview on how to set constructive New Year’s resolutions.

10 Toys That Stimulate The Imagination

I love watching my kids play with the classic toys, like blocks, balls, cars, and dolls. Knowing that they do more than just entertain, that they help with the development process is always a plus. The "new-fangled" toys with bells and whistles seem to take over my home, but I try to work in time every day with the classics, which really isn't that hard with my two. I love seeing their sense of adventure and imaginations grow day-by-day. Today, I want to share 10 toys that can help stimulate your little's imagination.

While some of this list are toys that I learned about and studied while pursuing a degree in elementary education, others are ones that I have learned more about since becoming a mom.

1. Dress up clothes. I know it is obvious but true.

2. Blocks (of any kind)- Did you know that Frank Lloyd Wright grew up playing with blocks?

3. Puzzles

4. Dinosaur/ Animal Play Sets

5. Cars

6. Dolls

7. Musical Instruments

8. Play Dough

9. Occupational play sets (building, cooking, mail, etc)

10. Found Items. I actually love watching my kids play with cardboard boxes, empty spice containers, paper tubes, and more. It amazes me seeing what they come up with.

This may seem an obvious list, but I am continuously amazed by the parents that forget about these toys and rely solely on toys with bells and whistles. Just think, you don't even have to buy anything- just give them a box and let their imaginations run wile.

Book Review: Jesus Helps Me

Disclaimer: I received a book to review. All opinions are my own.

I am always looking for books to help my children understand God, his purpose for us, and his love for us. More than that, I am looking for ways to help my children grow in their love for God. Graham Blanchard has become a go-to resource for my quest and their newest book Jesus Helps Me, has become a staple in our reading time.

Jesus Helps me ($8.99), by Callie Grant is part of the Knowing My God series. These books, "Learn Books," are a specialized group of books by Graham Blanchard that cover 4 levels of exploration: a bible passage, real-world photographs, supportive captions that relate the scripture to a child's life, and thinking questions to get the conversation going with your child.

Jesus Helps Me explores the passage John 12: 44-47. It helps children get a deeper knowledge of Jesus' words and his quest to help everyone to believe in him.

This book has gorgeous photos and I love how the scripture is spaced throughout the book to help children understand the different parts and take it in, instead of trying to understand the passage as a whole. My children and I have enjoyed exploring Jesus' words and having conversations about Jesus. I have been amazed at the conversations that have come up during reading.

How To Always Send Birthday Cards On Time

I don't know about you, but birthdays tend to creep up on me and then I find myself searching for one and delivering it the day of the birthday or adding in a "belated birthday" message and feeling guilty for not remembering a loved one's big day. A few years ago, I found a solution that works perfectly.

This is a fairly simple process that takes a bit of time to get set up, but will save a lot of time throughout the year.

What you need:

  1. Perpetual Calendar
  2. Boxes of birthday cards (and special ones for special people)
  3. A Calendar with pockets (ours comes from the local power co-op each year)
  4. Sticky Notes
  5. Stamps (although these could be purchased each month)
While this process is simple, the time is what is spent!

Super Simple Steps:

  • Make sure your perpetual calendar is filled out with birthdays and anniversaries
  • Fill out each birthday card for the entire year (do not seal)
  • If you want to add a gift or money, write it on a sticky note and attach to the front of the card.
  • Stamp the cards (although this step can be done as you mail it.
  • Divide the cards by month, but put the first week of the month with the previous month. You will have a month's worth of cards together, but the first birthdays of the month will still be on time.
  • Stick the cards in the appropriate pocket.
  • At the beginning of each month, pull the cards, check for stickies, seal and mail.
  • Be known as the woman who does it all and sends birthday cards on time.
