Eat Drink And Be Scary Disney Villain Style

Disclaimer: I received a product to review. All opinions are my own,

I don't know about you, but when I watched princess movies, something about the villains drew me in. No matter the movie, that's what happened. My mom first noticed it with The Little Mermaid, then she realized it was all of them. Even though they all spoke to me, the ultimate bad girl and villain is Maleficent. Something about her just always drew me in. The recent movie that focus on these bad girls of Disney have drawn me in even more. My husband thinks it is hilarious that I'm drawn to the darker side of Disney, but I think it is a hazard of my work aka lifelong obsession with the darker side of life.

They all know that when it comes to Disney, give me the bad girls. By the way, it's not just the girls, I prefer Captian hook too!

Having a little girl, the princess movies are making their way back into my home and I love it because I still get my fix of these glorious villains that speak to my darker side. Maybe it's the paranormal investigator in me that draws me to them, I'm not sure.

When I had the chance to try out some new makeup cases featuring these beautiful women from my childhood, I was beyond excited.

I was in need of a couple new makeup cases anyway, but just hadn't found any that spoke to me and I like to be inspired by my cases. I use a structured train case with compartments to hold all of it, but I need something smaller for my everyday choices. Also, preparing to cut my hair off again and banish the pony-tail, I needed something to house my hair tools, goos, and bows- while keeping them away from curious children. My problem now has a solution.

I was sent the Maleficent version of the Weekender (8.75 x 4 x 6 $11.99) and the Round Top (7 x 2 x 5 $7.99). An Organizer case (8 x 3.75 x 5.25 $9.99) and a Train Case 8 x 3.75 x 5.25 $11.99), all embellished by beautiful artwork of the infamous Disney Villians Maleficent, Snow White's Evil Queen, and Ursula. Designed by London SOHO New York and available at Walgreens, these will be the perfect gift for the bad girl in your life.

I must say, these are truly beautiful cases and being surrounded by so much of the princesses, it is nice to have one of the bad girls staring back at me while I get ready for the day. They are made with amazing quality, actually easy to wipe down, and are elegant. I even love the feel of them. What a great day to start my day. I keep my hair products for when I get the strength to banish the knot on my head in the Weekender and my makeup in the round top case- and it fits inside. One bag to the bathroom to get ready (yes, I have to hide my "pretties" away from the Tbomb- he likes painting his sister). Now, I just want to get my hands on the Villians make up sets- they are calling me.

Grilling Time With Cave Tools

Disclaimer: I received a product to review. All opinions are my own.

My family loves to grill. If you follow me on Instagram, you have seen evidence of this, and even our new fire pit the Mr and his dad built. We are now able to grill more now and all they have to do is pick up sticks and logs that need to be cleaned out of the woods anyway. When Cave Tools reached out to me to review a product for the holidays, I knew which one I wanted my honey to try out. The kabob skewers rack.

When his new toy arrived, the Mr was beyond excited to get started, and was quite impressed with the quality and build of this Kabob Rack. The entire set up is Stainless Steel, keeping it from melting, rusting, and keeping the black from the fire from sticking around.

Although it is lightweight, it is very sturdy and will stand up to many grilling sessions. There are so many things you can cook Kabob style that it never gets old. My husband really liked the disk that go on the end of the skewers to keep the food from falling off. He also mentioned that the "handles" were very handy and must better than the loops on the end of other skewers.

I am a huge fan of Cave Tools already, after reviewing their meat claws, which work great for barbeque. So, I knew this would be a quality addition to our grilling items.

He loves this thing. We cook a lot of wild game and sometimes we don't want a lot of prep, so he'll chop some pieces of meat, I'll chop some veggies and my baby will cook us a yummy dinner, well, he was having to use a cast iron skillet, but now he just makes kabobs. We found another use for it as well. Neither of us wanted to cook after a lazy day, so we decided on quick hot dogs over the fire. Mr had an idea and dashed into the house to grab his new toy. Works great for hotdogs too!

Looking for something for the man in your life this Christmas? This is definitely a winner!

Adventure Time: Monocular Waterproof Telescope

Disclaimer: I recieved a product to review. All opinions are my own.

As most of you know by now, my husband and  are avid bigfoot researchers. We have been featured in news clips, magazines, and now some of the evidence my husband helped capture has been called "the best audio evidence of Bigfoot ever captured." we love trying out new gear, so when I had the opportunity to try out this Ohuhu waterproof monocular telescoped, I jumped at it. I think the Mr was more excited than me, so I let him have the reigns on this one and he couldn't have been happier.

We have used binoculars in daytime expeditions before, but they just don't get the job done right. This was the perfect addition to his arsenal. He likes to sit in a treestand during the day and ust watch themovement in the woods, this helps him know the animal activity in the area, which helpsus to rule out sounds we hear at night and we can't see things. A couple of evenings ago, we were sitting in the edge of the treelinee behind our house and my husband decided to bring out htis telescope and see what kind of wildlife he could show Tbomb. We heard some movement and in no time, he spotted a wild boar. This excited him and Tbomb. That was so worth it!

At only $19.99 on Amazon, the features are amazing. Not only is it waterproof, but it comes with a tripod for more steady viewing. It has 12x magnification, which is awesome, an adjustable eyecup, can be used with or without glasses, and a great rubberized coating that is great at giving it a non-slip grip. Spending a lot of time in the swamp, the Mr is very happy with these fetures. It also comes with a carry case, cleaning cloth, and directions.

Celebrate Game Day With Old El Paso and Publix + #Giveaway #GameDayFavorites #10Tips

I don't know about you guys, but here in The South, Football is king. We celebrate game day like nobody's business. We get the kids involved and everything. I've always been a football fan, but everyone has a special place in their hearts for football. Whether you're cheering rec, middle school, JV, high school, college, or pro (then, there is even Adult local leagues)- a football game becomes a time to celebrate. Me personally, I'm a pro ball girl, but to each his/ her own.

Since I was a kid and mom had a Superbowl party every year (just for dad and I to enjoy), I have loved game day parties. My absolute #GameDayFavorite is setting up a taco bar. Just add some football cookies and you have all you need. Tacos are an American favorite for an American game. They are easy to eat, filling, and fun! I'll share with you some tips or setting up your next Taco Bar to make your #OEPGameDay the best it can be. It gets even better- grab this coupon.

10 Tips For A Successful Game Day Taco Bar

1. Start with an Old El Paso Taco Dinner Kit- everything you need is included (except meat and fresh toppings). You can even get them with both hard and soft taco shells. They will make your game day party more successful and you can always pick up the extra things you want. You'll probably want to pick up extra shells depending on the number of guests you are expecting. Grab the coupon.

2. Don't forget your favorite toppings by Old El Paso, like green chiles, beans, condiments, cheeses, sauces, and more. Be sure to grab the coupon

3. Pick up fresh toppings like cheese, lettuce, tomato, avocados, and sour cream. Guacamole Game Day Recipes will give you even more ideas- grab this coupon to help. Tip: Use canned tomatoes- you don't have to cut them, they are easier to serve, and they taste great!

4. Pick up a football themed dessert, to keep the festivities alive!

5. Get festive and decorate- you can use football themed serving trays, party plates, and jerseys up, and even use pennants and jerseys as table decor.

6. Gather a couple more TVs in the common room for checking other games. While you're at it, set up a small one or a laptop in the kitchen so everyone can stay caught up on the game and never miss a play.

7. Remember to keep dietary restrictions in mind. You may want to ask your guests if they have any. We always have a vegetarian option, as well as sugar-free desserts. However- anytime we have an event, we ask ahead of time for special dietary restrictions. I always have sugar-free stuff with me for the kids, but it sure is nice when people think of it.

8. Gather activities for the kids that may come. Not all kids are interested in football and may not stay calm. Keep your guests from missing plays by having fun for the kids too. You can get coloring books, board games, crafts, and even movies with a portable DVD player and headphones- most of which, you probably have on hand.

9. Keep wet wipes, stain remover pens, and other quick clean up items on hand in case of spills. (Don't forget the Lysol during cold and flu season)

10. Relax and enjoy- you saved money, bellies are full, and eyes are on the game. Don't stress- enjoy the game.

Press Release: Who’s The Boss? More Women Decide They Are

Business Woman Offers Advice To Others Ready
To Take The Entrepreneurial Plunge

The number of American women who own their own businesses is on the rise.

It’s estimated that more than 9.1 million women now lead their own enterprises. What’s more, from 1997 to 2014, when the number of businesses in the United States grew by 47 percent, those owned by women grew by 68 percent, according to a report published by American Express OPEN.

One woman who is part of that trend – and is helping other women become their own bosses, too – says those statistics may not be that surprising.

“I think many women are willing to branch out on their own because they decide that the benefits outweigh the risks,” says Dr. Diana Hoppe, founder of Amazing Over 40 Inc. (www.amazingover40.com), a health coaching certification program for women.

“We live in a time when people often re-invent themselves because job opportunities are limited or they are looking for new challenges.”

Hoppe says that when you do that, it’s important to study the market to see where the opportunities are going to be and find a good fit for yourself.

“The women I work with who are going into health coaching, for instance, understand that having a health coach is a major trend in fitness,” she says. “So look at the trends. Where will the opportunities be?”

October is National Women’s Small Business Month and Hoppe says there are plenty of advantages to starting a business. Among them:

• Be Your Own Boss. When you own your own business, you can discover what it’s like to be fully independent, dictating your own path without anyone looking over your shoulder. You’re the boss and the decisions are yours.

• Set Your Own Schedule. Maybe you want to work a full 40-hour week, or maybe you are seeking a part-time schedule. When you are setting up your own business, you have more flexibility about when, where and how you work.

• Find Work That Fulfills You. Those who start a business can create a career for themselves that provides fulfillment. Hoppe says she has seen that in action with women who decided to become health coaches. They can personally change the lives of the clients they work with, helping them take charge of their health and discover their best selves. “I think it’s always important – whether you are launching a business or building a career working for someone else – that you find something you consider rewarding,” she says.

But it’s also critical to have a strong business plan so that you understand the market, have specific goals and know how to achieve those goals.

“If you don’t focus on building a strong foundation for your business at the beginning, it is likely to fail or not grow as fast as it can,” Hoppe says.

Among the factors to consider is that some businesses require more overhead than others. For example, if you are working from home, you don’t need to worry about leasing commercial space. Regardless, it’s crucial to make sure you have the necessary capital for whatever business you launch.

That’s been challenging at times for women, according to the National Women’s Business Council. Research shows that businesses owned by women start with about half the amount of capital as men, the council reports.

But don’t think you need millions of dollars, Hoppe says. Many successful businesses have been started with a relatively small amount of money.

“One of the most frequent questions I get asked involves what the start-up costs are for becoming a health coach,” she says. “This is a good example of one of the less costly businesses to start. Mainly, you just need business cards, a cell phone, a computer and transportation. Of course, not every business is quite that simple.”

Once a business is in full swing, one goal is to continue to grow the business while keeping current clients or customers happy, Hoppe says.

“One thing you can do for your customers is develop a relationship with them by engaging them on social media or by keeping them interested with email content,” she says. “Customer service is a critical part of any business because once someone begins to use your product or service, you want them to keep coming back.”

Ancient Chinese History

There are many startling similarities between ancient Chinese history and that of ancient Rome. These similarities have led archaeologists to wonder if one nation learned from the other, or if it was a case of parallel evolution.

The Roman Empire and the Chinese Empire faced threats from so-called barbarians who attempted to invade the nation’s boundaries. For the Romans, the barbarians included the Huns. For the Chinese, the barbarians included the Xiongnu. Interestingly, it is thought that these two groups may have in fact belonged to the same ethnic group. Both the Romans and the Chinese conquered the barbarian groups that were near their nation’s borders and forced them to fight in their imperial army’s. In both instances, the barbarian groups eventually grew to become powerful nations that held the power. The difference is that the barbarians that the Romans faced eventually destroyed the Empire, whereas the Chinese absorbed their barbarian enemies.

Both the Chinese and the Romans absorbed the religions of the nations around them. This was especially the case when they were faced with civil strife and disorder. For the Romans, adapting to Christianity eventually led to the downfall of the Empire. Many think that this was because the divinity of the Emperor was challenged and instead focus was put on a non-earthly God. On the other hand, after China absorbed Confucianism and Daoism, the nation was stabilized, and they were able to successfully pass through times of cultural and political unrest.

Both the Roman Empire and the Chinese Empire viewed the Emperor as divine. It was a challenge for both the Chinese and Romans to select the individual who would rule after the city member died. In Rome, a man’s military prowess was usually what was considered. Their goal was to choose the best general for the job. The Chinese on the other hand looked for a man who would be able to maintain control over the imperial family.

The Chinese and the Romans, women were subordinate to men. Both societies had well-established hierarchies where men took the lead. They viewed marriage as a way of confirming alliances with foreign powers. Both empires were concerned that excessive concern with sexual relationships could lead to the downfall of their society, and so they enacted strict codes of morality.

Both the Chinese and the Roman Empire have had lasting impacts on society. Without their sense of adventure, inventiveness, and feeling of divine right, the modern world as is known today would not exist.

Revamp the Thanksgiving Menu with New Appetizers #recipe

Nielsen-Massey Vanillas offers recipes that change up how families start their Thanksgiving meals.

Waukegan, Ill. (October 12, 2015) – If Americans followed Thanksgiving tradition exactly as it happened, we would be having lobster for dinner. The Thanksgiving menu has evolved significantly from when the Pilgrims first ate at Plymouth Rock to include seasonal favorites such as turkey and mashed potatoes. This Thanksgiving, evolve your traditional menu and add new hors d’oeuvres recipes that are perfect for pairing with wine and cheese plates.

“For many families, the Thanksgiving meal is rooted in tradition,” said Craig Nielsen, CEO, Nielsen-Massey Vanillas, Inc. “But by adding one or two new recipes to the menu, at-home chefs can keep everyone’s favorite stuffing and pumpkin pie, while also wowing their guests with unconventional starters.”

While guests mingle leading up to dinner, start off simple with Parmesan Zucchini Crisps. The classic Italian cheese mixed with Nielsen-Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Powder adds extra flavor to the standard zucchini. Pair the crunchy snack with the zesty dip recipe to make an extra tasty starter for friends and family.

Breaded Veal Meatballs with Vodka Sauce are the perfect bite to spice up pre-dinner treats. With the combination of oregano, parsley, and Nielsen-Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Bean Paste, the hearty meatballs have an excellent savory flavor with a hint of sweetness to tie it all together. Served with a tangy tomato vodka sauce, these juicy meatballs will quickly become a family favorite.

Make the spread complete with Sausage Stuffed Cremini Mushrooms, recipe below. With ingredients like garlic, Romano and mascarpone cheeses, and Italian sausage, these savory mushrooms will keep guests coming back for more. The creamy mascarpone mixed with the sharp Romano complements the sausage, while the mushrooms serve as a salty base that is perfect for guests to munch on. The simple recipe and spice-filled flavor make these mushrooms an easy choice before any Thanksgiving feast.

Branch out this Thanksgiving and use these starters to create new and different traditions the whole family can enjoy.

Sausage Stuffed Cremini Mushrooms

Cremini mushrooms, about 1 pound, stemmed, quickly rinsed and patted dry

Juice of 1 lemon (about 3 tablespoons)

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

8 fl. oz. mild Italian sausage (may substitute with spicy Italian sausage)

1 tablespoon Nielsen-Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Bean Paste

3 large cloves garlic, minced

1 shallot, minced (about 1 tablespoon)

1/3 cup freshly grated Romano cheese

1/3 cup plain panko bread crumbs

1/4 cup mascarpone cheese

Directions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Coat a 9x13 inches baking dish with cooking spray; set aside. In a medium bowl, add lemon juice and oil; whisk to combine. Add clean mushroom caps and toss to coat; set aside.

In a large non-stick skillet over medium heat, add sausage, vanilla bean paste, garlic and shallot. Cook and stir until crumbles are done, about 8-10 minutes. Reduce heat to low and add Romano cheese, bread crumbs and mascarpone cheese; stir to combine. Remove from heat.

Place mushroom caps in prepared baking dish and reserve remaining lemon-oil mixture in bowl. Fill each mushroom cavity with stuffing mixture and drizzle with reserved lemon-oil. Bake until done, about 10 minutes.

Press Release: 5 Behaviors That Help Teens Learn To Bounce Back

Young People Grow In Confidence Through Risks
And Responsibilities, Says Expert On Adolescent Behavior

It’s no secret that adolescence is a time of high stress for many teens.

Although some young people navigate these difficult years with reasonable aplomb, many struggle and are unable to cope as they run into troubles in school, at home or in their neighborhoods.

That’s where adults can step in and aid them in cultivating the mental tools they need to bounce back from life’s most trying moments.

“It’s our job as parents and educators to help our young people develop the flexibility and resiliency to withstand the challenges they face on their path to adulthood,” says Linda Mornell (www.Lindamornell.com), an adolescent therapist and author of the book “Forever Changed: How Summer Programs and Insight Mentoring Challenge Adolescents and Transform Lives.”

Mornell has worked with teenagers for almost 45 years, both through her private counseling practice and as founder of the highly effective nonprofit organization Summer Search, which provides disadvantaged young people with challenging and even life changing mentoring and summer opportunities.

She says that encouraging the following five behaviors can help teens learn to bounce back rather than fold under the stresses of the adolescent years.

• Reach out rather than retreat. Recent research tells us that the adolescent brain is flexible and highly sensitive to stress, Mornell says. “Many teens withdraw into themselves when they are stressed, rather than reaching out to others,” she says. “When they do that, they miss out on learning different ways of handling and relieving those stresses, as well as diffusing intense feeling in more positive ways.” As parents try to address this, they need to understand that adolescents routinely say the opposite of what they feel. “‘Go away’ often means ‘please stay,’ ” Mornell says. “Parents should not leave but sit down and wait.”

• Tell their story. The ability to put their story into coherent words gives teens the chance to see it from a distance and gain perspective, Mornell says. They also can compare their story to the stories of others, and that creates a sense of community. She says parents should avoid interrupting and be willing to listen when an adolescent feels like talking.

• Separate from home and parents. For adolescents to gain autonomy and confidence, it’s essential that they sometimes separate themselves physically and psychologically from their parents, Mornell says. That’s becoming harder and harder to do in today’s world where cell phones give people instant and constant communication. “For teenagers, this over communication reinforces the idea that the world is a challenging and even dangerous place, and that they aren’t capable of learning to handle those challenges and dangers on their own.” Mornell suggests that parents avoid constant texting and connection, and give their teens room to make their own decisions.”

• Engage in exploration and positive risk-taking. It’s hard for teens to learn how to bounce back from challenges if they’ve been protected from encountering any significant difficulties to bounce back from. “Parents should encourage teens to reach out of their familiar and safe comfort zones and take positive risks like meeting new people, exploring different activities and participating in scary sounding summer opportunities like wilderness expeditions,” Mornell says.

• Take responsibility for others. Caretaking is one of the best ways to increase resiliency, whether you are babysitting, volunteering in a home for elders, or standing up for kids who are bullied, Mornell says. “When teens lend a hand to help others, they experience and support eternal values and enhance the sense of their own worth. Parents should spend time talking with teens about their family values for helping others.”

Celebrate the Under-Celebrated Milestones with Vtech + Huge Toy #Giveaway

Disclaimer: The product has been provided by VTech so I could experience it with my family; however, the thoughts and opinions are my own.

Think back to when your child was a baby- or maybe is still a baby. Which milestones do you remember the most? Are they the ones that are often recorded in a baby book, or are they different ones like first hiccups and first temper tantrum. Those are the ones I remember the most. For Tbomb, it was his first case of the hiccups- he got so angry. For Kodabug, I remember her first taste of chocolate- she got so excited that she could not contain herself. Each kid is so different it is amazing. With Trevor, I always watched for those milestones that everyone talks about, like first steps, first words, and so on. With Kodabug, I was a bit more relaxed. She's our last and we paid more attention to those things that make her the most unique baby, in our minds.

Here are some of my favorite more recent milestones.

Here are some of the moments that make my children who they are. They are so different, but both so smart and loving.

I had gotten a large box delivered and sat the box to the side while I was dealing with the contents. Tbomb was about 20 months old and put himself in the box. I remember it like it was yesterday. I got such a kick out of watching him shut himself up in the box. To this day, he loves to play in boxes.

Miss Independent Kodabug really showed it the first time she was sick. Instead of crawing in my lap like her brother, she layed herself down in the floor and covered herself with Tbomb's road. She was pitiful. A little at a time, she would get all of her favorite toys her here. Here you can see her ball, blanket, and train.

Kodabug is not scared of anything. Tbomb is a bit more cautious, so when he decided to climb the "rock wall" all by himself, it was definitely worth noting. Look at him go!

This was the first time Kodabug really joined us for school. Normally, I just let her play with educational toys during school time, but that wasn't working this day. She had to be like her brother. I got out the workbook I had been working on putting together and let her have at it. She loved it!

This was their first field trip to the library. Both of them found something they loved. The first book Kodabug saw was a Hello Kitty book and Tbomb fell in love with the train station. They enjoyed visiting Paddington, especially since we had been reading it. This will be mamarked down as one of the best days ever.

Each child has special milestones

Vtech has an amazing resource that all parents should put in their toolbox. Their Advisory Council  has collaborated with Vtech to create an amazing milestones resource. This resource is broken down by age from birth to nine years old. Then, each age is broken into categories- Language and Cognigive; Social and Emotional Development; and Physical and Motor. This resource explains the different characteristics and developments at each age. Then, they take it a step further and recommend products that are best for children at each stage.

Toys Help Children Learn

These toys rom Vtech help with the development at each stage and are highly recommended by the Advisory Council. My kids had a chance to play with them and loved them!

This toy is recommended for ages 9-36 months, but both of my kids had a ball with it. They would get so excited wiwth the balls spinning down- it really was cute to watch. The balls spin and talk. The whole time, they are teaching the kids about colors and numbers. When the kids drop the balls in the top, they either say the color or count- Tbomb knows these things, but loves playing with it while Kodabug is learning colors and numbers. It has over 100 songs, melodies, sounds, and phrases. On top of all of that, it has buttons that tach about insects, colors, and numbers while helping to develop fine motor skills. ($29.99)

This toy is great for kids of all ages and is recommended for 12-36 months. This train has so many features it is crazy. There are 10 different activities that help kids learn the alphabet, colors, numbers, and more. It helps build motor skills with 6 different manipulative features. These include a storybook, clock, gears, and 13 double sided blocks with the alphabet on them. The caboose even turns into a waton they can fill with toys and pull along. They can also ride on it and push the train. This is their favorite toy In fact, they kind of fight over it. There are lots of activities for both of them, even the 5-year-old. ($49.99)

This is definitely one of my favorite Vtech toys. It reminds me of so many of the toys I had a a kid, but with more features. Kodabug is so smart, but she is still not talking. We try to find her as many language development toys as possible. This toy is best for ages 18 months to 4 years, but even my 5-year-old loves it (I love it too). This is an amazing vocabulary builder, with 6 activities that assist with language development. Kodabug loves spinning the lights around to letters, phonics, objects, animals, and more. Tbomb loves switching it to music mode for the sound effects and melodies (he's my music baby).  ($19.99)

This particular toy has been put in our Homeschool Supplies. The kids love playing with it all the time, but I like to dedicate it to writing and other homeschool activities and it is perfect for a kid that likes to fidget. This board is interactive and teaches how to write and draw objects and letters step-by-step. This is exactly what kids learning to hold a pencil and write letters need. There are interactive demonstrations that help preschoolers learn proper stroke order for upper and lowercase letters. The coolest feature is that it even teaches them to write their names one letter at a time. There are a lot of drawing activites included , as well as melodies, sounds, staps, and stencils. It is recommended for ages 3-6, but my 2-year-old loves it as well. ($24.99)

Being the homeschooling mother of a 5-year-old and a 2-year-old, finding educational options in toys, apps, and entertainment is a must. We have learned to embrace technology in school, while traveling, and definitely during quiet time. I allow a certain amount of screen time a day, and with most of their apps being educational, I rest easy. I have changed that up a little since downloading this app. They now are allowed a certain amount of time in addition to that to play Kids Academy Preschool education center.
Kids Academy – the team behind some of the top educational apps for kids with over 10 million downloads worldwide just released the long-awaited version of their flagship app – Preschool Education Center. Starting Your Own Venture: 3 Ways to Choose Your Business

We came across a new book that we just had to share! Do you long to stay home with your kids and work from home? Or…are you a stay at home mom already, but want to start a business working from home to fulfill your dreams and aspirations? Me- I've always wanted to work in marketing and I love social media (although it wasn't around when I was in college). Being a blogger has opened up a completely different world to me that allows me to combine all of my interest- eventually pushing me to start my own business. Author, Holly Hurd from VentureMom.com has written a guest article sharing some unique tips on how to decide what business to start; tips which can be found in her new book!

For many people, the decision to start their own business comes easy. They know they want to be their own boss. They know they want the freedom of working for themselves. They know they want to build something that lasts for their families.

But the next question is a lot harder.

“What kind of business should I start?”

The best businesses are always the ones the owners are passionate about. You may fall into a great opportunity to own, say, a bakery. It may make a lot of money. But if you aren’t interested in baked goods and baking, you won’t give it your all. Your motivation will wane and eventually it will just feel like a job.

I meet a lot of women (and men) who have a fire inside them to start a business, but they can’t get past that question of what to do. They spin their wheels, bouncing from one idea to the next, never really deciding on anything, until they eventually give up.

In my book, Venture Mom: From Idea to Income in Just 12 Weeks, I go into detail about picking your business, but here are three basic tips to get you started. You can learn more on this subject and how to turn your idea into a profitable venture in my book.

1. Examine what you used to love

Often our entrepreneurial passions come from our past. Maybe you loved putting together photo books for family and friends, but motherhood got in the way and your hobby was the first to go.

Perhaps you led a fitness group with your friends years ago or took people on guided tours of your city. Maybe you knitted baby booties for each of your children or helped your friend redesign her retail store for better sales.

Just because something used to be part of your life doesn’t mean it can’t be again. Turn those old hobbies into profit today.

2. Inventory how people compliment you

When people throw you a compliment, it’s because you’re so good at something, it’s worth mentioning. If you hear, “I love your garden,” take note. You may think everyone can plant a beautiful garden, but that's usually not the case. Your talent is someone else's pain.

If someone says, “You make the most amazing homemade ice cream cakes,” maybe you have a baking skill that people will pay for.

Take notice when someone compliments something you have made or something you do. For example, let's say you craft your own belt buckles and you hear, “I love that belt buckle, where can I get one like it?" that could be a clue to a venture. Or they might say something like, “Your garage is so neat and organized. I wish someone would help me get my garage cleaned out," or "I love how you style your bookcases, would you ever do that for me?" or "You're so good at putting together outfits. Will you help me clean out my closet and put together my wardrobe?" These are clues that you have a talent that others could use.

3. Find your special talent

This is the simplest way to pick a business idea. Obviously the best thing to sell (product or service) is something you’re good at.

People get caught up on this one because they don’t feel their talents are marketable, but that’s rarely true. Some ideas may take more time or more work than others (and may involve a lot of learning), but there’s a market out there to sell pretty much anything.

Let’s say you just love bird watching. “You can’t make money bird watching,” you think. Wrong. With the Internet, you can turn anything into a venture.

You could find people online and take them on bird tours of an exotic area. You could catalog your finds in an eBook and sell it on Amazon. You could build a website and blog around bird watching and create content that attracts users (and eventually advertisers). Just about anything that you have an intense interest in, can be made profitable.

It’s up to you

At the end of the day, you have to be the one to make the decision. Any venture you start will have ups and downs but if you are doing something you are passionate about, it won't feel like work at all. There will be days when you doubt your idea but soldier on and it will be worth the pursuit. Half the fun is the path.

Press Release: Education Feature: Classroom innovation helping kids improve focus and reduce anxiety

(Winston-Salem, North Carolina) – Research shows that kids learn better when they aren't forced to sit still, glued to a desk or chair for hours on end during a school day. But can they actually fidget, squirm and wiggle their way to better grades in a classroom? And can they do it in a way that’s not disruptive and promotes productivity? According to Scott Ertl, a Winston-Salem, North Carolina elementary school counselor, they can – especially with the help of his effective solution called "Bouncy Bands" that is quickly winning over teachers and students nationally.

Ertl has spent several years refining and perfecting Bouncy Bands, an innovative classroom tool that aids "kinesthetic learning" for kids. Bouncy Bands are heavy duty rubber straps that attach to the legs of student desks that allow the kids to lightly bounce their feet and stretch their legs as a way to release their extra energy, anxiety, and boredom during the day while working quietly in a classroom. The Bouncy Bands come with support pipes that keep the bands suspended at the perfect height for kids' feet to rest and bounce.

In a national survey of 144 teachers and 686 students in 22 states:

87% of students said that Bouncy Bands helped them feel calmer during tests

92% of students said that Bouncy Bands let them move so they can relax betting in class

88% of teachers reported that kids using Bouncy Bands focused better in class

76% of teachers reported that kids using Bouncy Bands tended to stay on task longer

Bouncy Bands are also an excellent resource for those students who suffer from test anxiety. Nationwide, as many as 38% of students have moderate to high test anxiety, making it the most prevalent scholastic impairment for students. Bouncy Bands help those students reduce their stress and focus more on the learning tasks at hand since the product helps soothe the anxiety they feel.

Ertl is not new to making breakthroughs in active learning in education. In 2009, he created the nation’s first "Read and Ride" program for students to ride exercise bikes and read books at the same time. Hundreds of schools around the world have replicated his program in their schools.

Bouncy Bands sell for $12 for chairs and $13 for desks. They are available at: www.BouncyBands.com and on Amazon.com

Teachers have used crowdfunding efforts to get Bouncy Bands into their classrooms so all students can benefit.

More than 400 teachers nationally have turned to DonorsChoose.org to get funded to equip their entire classes.

Press Release: HARVARD GRADUATE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION-LED EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP PROPOSES TRANSFORMATION OF TEACHER PREPARATION AND DEVELOPMENT

New White Paper Outlines 12 Design Challenges to Ensure Teacher Quality

CAMBRIDGE, MA – The Transforming Teaching Project, a Harvard Graduate School of Education-based initiative allied with education organizations across the nation, today released a white paper offering a comprehensive analysis of the problems with American teaching and detailing 12 Design Challenges to transform the teaching field. The white paper, entitled From Quicksand to Solid Ground: Building a Foundation to Support Quality Teaching, and written by Harvard Graduate School of Education associate professor Jal Mehta and his colleagues, argues for the development of a reliable and integrated set of mechanisms—a functioning system—to build teachers’ knowledge, skills, and expertise. The paper’s authors also challenge the education sector to codify current and future research and practical knowledge about quality teaching to improve teacher effectiveness in every classroom and to advance the field of education overall. The paper is the result of a two year effort to assess the state of the field, drawing on interviews with 60 sector leaders and 25 teachers, and initial pressure testing of ideas with several hundred educators.

DOWNLOAD FROM QUICKSAND TO SOLID GROUND: BUILDING A FOUNDATION TO SUPPORT QUALITY TEACHING HERE

“The quality of a teacher is the most critical school-based factor in student success. But we do not have a reliable system to build teachers knowledge, skills and expertise,” comments Mehta. “These 12 Design Challenges are critical first steps toward transforming the teaching field into one that is professional, consistently high-quality, rewarding, and revered.”

The paper has been endorsed by those seeking to improve and professionalize teaching across the political spectrum. Organizational endorsers include the National Education Association, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, the National Commission for Teaching and America’s Future, Deans for Impact, and Teach Plus. Individual endorsements include Norman Atkins, President of the Relay Graduate School of Education, Orin Gutlerner and Michael Goldstein, Founding Directors of Match Education, and Linda Darling-Hammond, President of the Learning Policy Institute and Emeritus Professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Education.

“The Transforming Teaching project is the right effort at the right time,” said Ben Riley, Founder and Executive Director of Deans for Impact, and a member of the Transforming Teaching leadership team. “There have long been calls to elevate the prestige and improve the professionalization of teaching, but this new endeavor is taking concrete steps toward making those goals the reality in the US. Just as importantly, this project is steered by broad set of stakeholders who are collectively in position to lead the transformation.”

“"This paper powerfully describes the challenges we must address to create the systems that our teachers deserve and our students need,” said Darling-Hammond. “In an era in which we are committed to helping all students think, reason, collaborate, and participate in democracy, we need to develop the kind of systems in which teachers are similarly supported, challenged, respected, and given opportunities to work together to develop deeper skills that will create a better future for their students."

The paper argues that there are three interrelated dimensions of the problem and the solution. The first is what the authors call the “missing R and D (research and development) system” -- the absence of usable knowledge about good teaching and the lack of intermediary organizations to get what knowledge there is into the hands of teachers.

“There is a huge amount of knowledge and wisdom in the heads of many practicing teachers. Almost every problem in teaching has been solved by someone somewhere,” said Mehta. “But that knowledge is largely invisible. There is no way for other teachers to access it. We need to create mechanisms by which teacher knowledge is shared, vetted, and made accessible to other teachers.”

The second dimension is the systems supporting teacher learning, the mechanism for getting knowledge into action. The paper argues that teacher learning at all stages of the pipeline needs improvement, and that we need more alignment between teacher preparation, induction, and ongoing professional development.

“"Historically, the incentives in America have been for teacher preparation to be ‘fast and cheap’ rather than longer and higher quality,” said Shael Polakow-Suransky, President of Bank Street College and a member of the Transforming Teaching leadership team. “If we want to improve teaching, we need a way to change these incentives so that high quality residency-like training becomes the rule rather than the exception."

The third dimension is the policy and political ecosystem that supports teaching. The paper argues that policy changes are needed to make teaching more attractive, affordable, and selective, diversify the teaching corps, create career ladders, and develop assessments that are consistent with 21st-century competencies.

One particularly noteworthy proposal in the paper is the idea that America should develop “teaching hospital” schools that would be centers for the training of new teachers, as well as places where researchers and master teachers could collaborate to develop new knowledge. Jesse Solomon, the executive director of Boston Plan for Excellence and a leadership team member, is working to create Teaching Academy schools in Boston which are modeled after teaching hospitals.

Collectively, the 12 Design Challenges seek to attract the most talented students to teaching, providing them and their practicing peers with support and actionable information about what good teaching looks like; ensuring introductory and ongoing training that provides them with the requisite skills and knowledge for classroom and student success; identifying certification methods that are rigorous and performance-based; and forging new career pathways where master teachers both anchor teacher training and ongoing knowledge development.

Many of the elements within the proposed system and addressed in the design challenges are happening in pockets across the nation. What makes the Transforming Teaching Project’s approach unique is that it calls for greater collaboration and cohesion across the higher education, P-12, and policy environments. By bringing together representatives from the field of education, state and district agencies, nonprofits, philanthropy, teachers unions and more, disjointed or siloed efforts are identified and opportunities for greater collaboration can emerge. Transforming Teaching held its first two convenings last May, bringing together many of the top organizations in the nation to work on these problems. Many of these individuals are part of a leadership team for the Transforming Teaching Project. (A full list of leadership team members can be seen here.)

The Transforming Teaching Project’s next steps include widely disseminating the 12 Design Challenges to the field, continuing to collaborate with education, academic, and political leaders on the creation of the proposed system, and building capacity to share information and knowledge about excellence teaching.

About The Transforming Teaching Project

Housed at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Transforming Teaching aims to revolutionize the way teaching is organized, supported, and regarded in the United States. The Project includes a growing coalition of teacher training programs, higher education institutions, non-profits, funding organizations, state and district agencies, teacher unions, and others committed to working in concert with one another to deliver transformative change in the teaching profession.

Southern Charm Sunday: Prepare For Unexpected Guests

Earlier in the year, a friend of ours lost her mom. She let us know that she may need to take off for a while and wanted to know if she could visit us for a few days if the need arose. Of course, she could stay with us. We got busy prepping the house for a guest. This got me thinking. What if we did this all the time and just kept the house ready for a guest- we never know when something may happen and someone needs an escape for a few days or an escape from a hurricane. Here are a few tips for keeping your home guest ready.

1. Set up a guest basket. This doesn't have to be a basket, it could just be a bin with a lid. Keep new toiletries, a guest towel and rag, and other items you think a guest may need.

2. Stock up on simple to cook breakfasts and other meals that are sure to impress. You can even purchase the Martha White muffin mixes. For an unexpected guest, it is okay to cook things like frozen lasagna it is easy, can be kept in the freezer, and allows you to spend time with your guest and not in the kitchen.

3. Keep your calendar organized and up to date. If you have an emergency guest, you can quickly see if you need to find them entertainment while you take care of something or if you need to reschedule an appointment.

4. We don't have a guest room and don't think guests want to sleep on kid beds, so we keep an air mattress and special set of sheets. We also keep sheets especially for someone sleeping on the couch (ours has recliners, not a pull out). Sometimes the guests get a grown up bed, but sometimes our guests get the couch or air mattress- it all depends on the situation.

5. Remember to be open and take it in stride. Your guests can feel your emotions, even if they don't realize it.

7. Keep extra snacks on hand. If you pick up just a few extra boxes of crackers, chips, and individual snacks. (It won't hurt to keep some kid items on hand).

8. We keep a couple of gift bags packed at all time. These are for last minute gifts (we keep a couple adult gifts and a couple kids gifts), but work great for "welcome to my home" gifts as well. I also have a couple of little travel packs to give kids before they head back home, especially if it is a long ride. Mom will thank you and the kids will be happy.

9. Let those people who are welcome to stay in your home know it. You are much less likely to get last minute phone calls regarding the stay. Even if they say: "Is it okay if I come sometime in June," that is better than nothing.

10. If at all possible, do not be a last minute guest. Do the same as you would expect from others.

Unique Baby Sweepstakes + #Giveaway

Disclaimer: I have been compensated for my participation in this program. However, all opinions are my own.

While I could sit here and say that my little Kodabug is the most unique baby out there, I would be lying because as amazing as she is, her brother is unique in his own way, as is every other baby out there. When I was contacted by Perrigo Nutritionals (the maker of Store Brand Formula) about the Unique Baby Sweepstakes, I knew I had to submit silly photos of Kodabug that really capture her own unique personality.

Since Kodabug was teeny tiny, she has had a love for cameras. The girl is going to be a model. If she sees a camera or phone pointed her way, she is going to give the prissiest little smile. Generally, unless she has a dumdum, she is the most photogenic child I have ever seen. Her smile- there are no words. She isn't talking yet, but her facial expressions, nods, shrugs, and shakes tell you all you need to know. She's 2 and not talking, but she communicates better than a lot of kids who do talk. She is so unique and blows my mind daily.

When we have a new baby, we know that our babies are unique, yet they need to have the proper nutrition. In that, they are not unique. When Tbomb was a baby, I was worried about making sure that he had everything he needed and thought that I had to have brand name formula. After doing some research, I learned that by law, store brand formulas have to have the proper nutrition, just like brand names. Tbomb had to has sensitive formula for his tummy issues and giving him the Parent's Choice (from Wal-Mart) or Up and Up (from Target) sensitive formulas were just like their brand name counterparts, at less than half the cost.  When buying formula, that is amazing news. Formula is strictly regulated by the FDA.

To celebrate that formula is not unique, but yoru baby is, Store Brad Formula is launching a "Unique Baby" photo sweepstakes. The winner will win $5000 and a year supply of Store Brand Formula.

It would be awesome of you could enter this contest. Store Brand Formula knows that your baby is unique and they want to know what sets your baby apart from the rest. Enter the contest and upload a photo of your little one showing their uniqueness. Is your baby making a silly face, a bizarre expression, an angry face, maybe their hair or outfit is crazy Whatever makes your baby unique, they want to see.

To enter:

Visit the webiste here and follow the photo submission guidelines and the on-screen instructions to complete the entry form. Entries must be submitted before November 5, 2015.

*One entry per person, per day for the duration of the sweepstakes.

1 Grand Prize winner will receive $5000 and one year supply of the winner's choice of Store Brand Baby Formula.

5 First Prize winners will receive $200 and a one year supply of the winner's choice of Store Brand Baby Formula.

Book Review: NKJV Foundation Study Bible

Disclaimer: I received a book to review. All opinions are my own.

As I've mentioned before, I have a love and fascination for Bibles of all types. I love to pull them all out and compare scriptures while studying. Even though I love reading different translations, I love the King James Version, more specifically- the New King James Version. When I'm doing my daily reading, or want to look up scripture, this is what I tend to pull out. I also like for my everyday bible to have references so that I don't have to pull out the concordance when I'm not doing in depth studying.

This NKJV Foundation Study Bible is just what I've been looking for for years. I do not get distracted by inserted devotions (I prefer a separate book for that), or by historical accounts. It is the scripture, with references at the bottom of each page. The translation is awesome. It is the regular KJV translation, without all the fancy words that we tend to get lost in. When I'm looking up a specific scripture or prayer, I get the version everyone knows and loves, not a rewritten version.

This bible even has Jesus' words in red, a concordance, and even full-color maps. I always like to turn to the maps and visualize where the scripture took place. The Bible itself is hardbound with a dust jacket and very sturdy. It is the perfect size to carry with you or to leave at home. This has quickly become my go-to Bible and I couldn't be happier with it.
