Press Release: Low Proficiency Expectations Conveying False Sense of Achievement

RELEASE:  Low Proficiency Expectations Conveying False Sense of Achievement
Low proficiency expectations are leaving students unprepared for success in College and the Workforce
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Today, the Foundation for Excellence in Education (ExcelinEd), released WhyProficiencyMatters.com, an interactive website that shows student proficiency levels state-by-state.
“Achieving proficiency ensures every student graduates prepared for success in college, a career or the military,” said Patricia Levesque, CEO for the Foundation for Excellence in Education. “Yet, because of low expectations, all children are not equally prepared for the challenges of college or today’s workforce.  Our education systems must raise proficiency expectations to ensure every child masters essential knowledge and skills.”
Every state draws a line – also called the proficiency cut score – on their annual assessment to determine if a student is proficient in the subject. This proficiency cut score varies state-by-state.
The respected National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) is considered the gold standard for measuring student proficiency. The difference between NAEP and individual states’ proficiency expectations are wide and varied. This discrepancy is called a “proficiency gap.”
Many states reported proficiency scores that are 30 percentage points higher than NAEP rates, with some states like Alabama and Idaho seeing a near 60 point variation between the two percentages.
When the proficiency cut score is too low, it conveys a false sense of student achievement to parents, teachers and educators. This false sense of achievement damages students’ long–term chance for success in college or the workforce.
  • $7 billion is spent annually by first-year college students to learn what they should have mastered in high school.
    • Source: National Bureau of Economic Research, Improving the Targeting of Treatment: Evidence from College Remediation, 2012
“Across the country, states are in the process of reviewing their proficiency cut scores,” Levesque added. “States must raise their proficiency expectations if they hope to create an education system where every child masters the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in the next grade – and most importantly – after high school.”

Press Release: The British TV Phenomenon DON'T STOP THE MUSIC is coming to the US!

The British TV Phenomenon DON'T STOP THE MUSIC is coming to the US!

Kickstarter Underway: Help Protect the Future of American Music Education

Imagine what it would be like if the talented artists, producers, and composers of the past and present had not been introduced to the power of music. This is the reality for large numbers of students, as schools throughout the US facing budget restrictions make music and art departments the first to go. The would-be musical stars of tomorrow are being denied access to essential education. In fact, just recently the city of Atlanta eliminated almost all music education programs. Although music education is often seen as a luxury, its absence from the curriculum is disastrous for America’s children, as the value of music extends well beyond any student’s potential for stardom. Music increases understanding of subjects such as math, science, and foreign language, and schools that offer a music program have graduation rates 20 percent higher than schools that don’t embrace the power of music. “Quite simply,” said director, Emmy Award winner Nicole Boxer, “art can save lives.”

It is for these reasons and more that The Content Farm, a DC-based production company, accepted the opportunity to create a program to help lead America’s movement to protect the future of music education. In 2014, the Channel 4 show Don’t Stop the Music inspired a nationwide movement to address the lack of music education in UK schools. Following the lead of star British pianist James Rhodes, and with the help of the producers and stars of the UK program, The Content Farm is working with American musicians, actors, directors, writers and educators, in addition to New York’s classical music radio station, WQXR, which conducted a highly successful instrument drive in 2014, to develop a US version of Don’t Stop the Music, slated to air in late 2016. This TV program – and the community outreach efforts surrounding it – will explore the widespread importance of music education and its deteriorating status in American schools, expose students to music in new and exciting ways, and encourage Americans to share their idle musical instruments, in a collective effort to help protect the future of music education. The event’s finale will be a televised concert at a notable venue – think Carnegie Hall or the White House! – featuring children from the series playing their new instruments alongside world-renowned musicians.

Legendary artists including Paul McCartney, Sting, Chris Martin, and the Edge supported the UK show, and American audiences can expect to see a similar level of superstar talent. Support from some of the biggest stars in music – a list already including Aloe Blacc, Arturo Sandoval (who’s donated his personal trumpet), Keith Lockhart, Lyle Lovett, Rhiannon Giddens and more – will help Don't Stop the Music USA create a musical intervention, inspiring parents and students to demand music education. In turn, American citizens will be called upon to support our nation’s children by providing students with their old instruments, empowering them to succeed in music education and beyond.

“If Taylor Swift drops in on a school for a surprise gig, is that going to awaken a student’s interest in learning music? Absolutely! That’s the type of experience we will bring to this program,” said Michael Holstein, executive producer of Don't Stop the Music USA.

“The attention from the TV program will spearhead our effort to collect, refurbish and distribute 50,000 instruments, which will benefit a quarter million students nationwide,” added Kathleen Drohan, manager of the WQXR Instrument Drive and outreach director for Don’t Stop the Music.
The production team recently launched a campaign to raise the funds they need to raise the full project budget. Learn more about Don’t Stop the Music USA at http://kck.st/1Cooiol.

Press Release: Why Our Students Need Access to a Modern Constitution

Why Our Students Need Access to a Modern Constitution

By Dr. Henry Bain

High school students should be required to read the Constitution, so goes the cry from some state legislators. It’s an idea that has gained support from the practice of the U. S. House of Representatives, which has lately started each yearly session by the members’ reading the Constitution aloud.

It sounds like a commendable strengthening of the curriculum, bringing students into a first-hand relation with the nation’s founding document, which is the source of government’s power and the rights of the people.

But such a reading would not really be a helpful contribution to the students’ learning about American government and how it works. Anyone who starts out to read the Constitution, in the form in which it is traditionally printed, is soon caught up in a snare of prose that made sense in 1787 but now has no practical significance. Indeed, fully one-fifth of the Constitution’s text is now obsolete.

A student required to read this text would have to wade through such unedifying matter as the provisions for the recapture of slaves that have escaped, and the strict banishment of alcoholic beverages from the land–no manufacture, no sale, no transportation, no importation, no exportation. To force students to wade through all of that text would turn them off at the very moment when they are about to enter the fascinating realm of American government and liberties.

There’s much more in the typical print of the Constitution that works against the student who is told to read it. Antique spellings and grammar give the text an alien flavor, making it seem to come from a different world. Many printings are studded with capital letters, in a manner that violates the rules that the students are taught in their English classes. Many have no headings, which are necessary in any difficult text.

For an informative, indeed an inspiring introduction to the Constitution, students should be freed from the verbiage that is antique, and that might even be regarded as downright insulting by African Americans. We should also spare them a study of the many constitutional provisions of a housekeeping nature, that have served their purposes, such as the declaration that the two-term limit on the President shall not apply to Harry S. Truman.

For today’s students we need the text of the Constitution presented in a well organized and reasonably-easy-to-read format. That means a Constitution with short sentences or phrases.

Long after my student days, I produced such a constitutional text, The Constitution of the United States of America. Modern Edition. Rearranged and Edited for Ease of Reading. It presents the original unchanged text of the Constitution in a logically organized format under a detailed set of explanatory headings.

I hope today’s high school students will get the chance to read the modern edition and think about what they read, turning the Constitution into an instrument for a well informed debate over the big issues of American government today.

Summer Must Have: Picnic Blanket

Disclaimer: I received a product to review. All opinions are my own.

I have been looking for a good picnic blanket or quite a while. I knew we would use it a lot because I got really tired of moisture soaking through when i would throw a blanket on the ground. The kids and I enjoy having lunch outside and a lot of the time when we go to the park, I'll put a blanket down on the dirt or sand for Kodabug to play on.

I hadn't purchased one yet because I just couldn't find one I was happy with. Honestly, none of them seemed sturdy enough for my little monsters. Then, I came across the picnic blanket from #practicopicnic and fell in love.

It is extra large (60in x 80in), folds easily, and is lightweight. That had me totally smitten. But it really is super light weight and super easy to fold. The waterproof backing is even tough. In fact, this blanket is more like a soft rug than a blanket. It is made of polar fleece and won't irritate your skin. While it will keep you warm at winter football games, it won't overheat you in the summer time.

Any time we are going to the lake, beach, park, a day trip, or on vacation, we are sure to throw it in the car- we have used it so many times that it pays to do so. We Even used it to accident proof a bed while on vacation and it worked brilliantly.

This is the perfect picnic blanket for any family!

Press Release: Sikorsky Announces 5th Year of Helicopter 2050 Challenge

Sikorsky Announces 5th Year of Helicopter 2050 Challenge

Kids to Create the Helicopter of the Future in Scholarship Competition

STRATFORD, Connecticut, June 1, 2015 – Sikorsky Aircraft, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX), has launched the 5th annual Sikorsky Helicopter 2050 Program and Challenge, which asks children, ages 9-16, to create an eco-friendly helicopter of the future that addresses potential challenges of 2050.

The national competition kicked off June 1 and will run until October 15, 2015. The winner of the 2015 competition will receive the Igor Sikorsky Youth Innovator Award and a $1,000 scholarship. In addition, the young innovator will be flown to Sikorsky’s headquarters in Stratford, Connecticut, to tour the assembly lines of the iconic BLACK HAWK and SEAHAWK® military helicopters and meet with Sikorsky rotorcraft engineers.

“Our goal is to challenge kids to think about the future and how they can use their science and math skills to make a positive change in the world,” said Judith Bankowski, Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Sikorsky Aircraft. “We understand how important it is to develop students’ skills and confidence in these subjects and to give kids of all backgrounds an opportunity to see themselves as future engineers, technologists and scientists.”

The Sikorsky Helicopter 2050 Challenge is a part of Sikorsky’s commitment to encouraging students’ hands-on learning in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The program also gives the corporation an opportunity to develop long-term relationships with tomorrow’s engineers.

Last year’s winner, Hana Bidon, 17, of West Haven, Connecticut, designed the Skylift Rescue 968 by mimicking the bone structure of birds to develop a lighter and more aerodynamic helicopter. The main body of the aircraft is made out of recycled fiber-composite materials, which use 3D vascular networks to self-heal. As a result, this helicopter repairs cracks with the aid of a technician.

Sikorsky co-sponsors this annual Challenge with By Kids For Kids, a Connecticut-based organization, whose educational content inspires kids to become successful inventors. The Challenge honors Sikorsky Aircraft founder Igor Sikorsky who, in 1939, led an engineering team that developed a vertical lift machine with a core design that is still used in a majority of helicopters flying today.

Schools, museums and camps throughout the country can use the fun, hands-on activities to help students imagine the environmental future and challenges of helicopters. Teachers, program facilitators, parents and museum staff can sign up at www.helicopter2050.com to download FREE program materials.

Family Time Hours

I'm kind of a workaholic. This is something that I've known about for years, but never really thought it was that big of a deal. Yes, I was that manager that took work home. I was that college student that worked on my term papers while "relaxing" and watching a movie. I'm one of those people that always needs to be doing something productive.

In my 30s though, I've noticed that that way of life doesn't work as well for me anymore. I no longer thrive on stress. I also have an almost 2 year old and almost 5 year old that need their mom to be present. I never saw myself as not present until recently during an episode while the kids were playing outside and I was answering emails. I missed a really sweet exchange between my kids, to be told about it later. I made a decision then. I was going to make some changes.
A photo posted by cari (@cari_on) on

No more answering emails and working during our family time in the evenings. I already work from "son up until sun down" as a stay at home mom. There is already not enough down time during the day. All that is changing. My baby is getting older and I do not want to miss it. So, from now on, I will not be answering emails or working during the hours of 5 and 9. These are the hours that it is cool enough to be outside and the kids play, get baths, eat dinner, and get ready for bed. Any thing needed during these hours will be handled before bed. Phone calls on the business line will not be answered - basically I will not be available to anyone outside my family. If you see me online, it will be posting adorable pictures of the kids on Instagram.

This will last through the summer, and may even be a permanent thing. These hours will now be spent playing with the kids, flirting with my husband, making plans for the family, swimming in the pool, eating watermelon, and whatever other adventures we come up with.

I have also made a change at bedtime to save my sanity. I no longer take work in the bedroom (I told you I'm a workaholic), but read at night beside my husband- and not business books, good novels and wattpad!

Don't worry though, I will handle all requests from clients before I go to bed (This announcement incluces The Palmetto Queen, Cari On Media, and Paranormal/ Bigfoot clients).

Dangerous Product: Neutab 7 Inch Tablet

Disclaimer: I did not receive this product for free and I have not been asked to write this post.

Last year for his birthday, Tbomb received a tablet from my inlaws. We were all ecstatic, especially my geeky little boy. He could play games, I could get work done, and I could add educational apps for him, plus use it for specifics in school.

It wasn't the best tablet, in fact, my MIL had tried to return it when she received it, but because of poor customer service, she figured it would be good enough for a 4-year-old. I was happy- I didn't want him connected to the WiFi anyway. After adding some parental control capabilities, games, educational apps, and setting up a reward system (earning new apps and earning new tablet time), we were good to go.

It worked perfect (besides the WiFi issues) for several months. He even played Minecraft on it (the paid for version). After this though, the problems started. It started shutting off on its own randomly, even with a full charge. Eventually, he had to use it plugged in (which is not really practical). Then, it started shutting off even then. I was determined to find the problem, my heart was broken for him.

A couple of weeks ago, we went to the mountains for a few days and, of course, Tbomb wanted to take his tablet. I decided that we would take it and I would work on it when I could- I knew he would have plenty of other things to entertain him. One evening, while the kids were watching a movie, I decided to work on his tablet once again. Well, looking back, I'm glad I did because I couldn't believe what I found.

I took his tablet out of his backpack and out of the case. It looked strange, so I took it out of the shockproof case it was in and t fell apart in my hands. The battery had expanded to the point of breaking the casing apart. Now at this point, my husband and father-in-law ran out of the hotel room with it, but wasn't sure what to do with it. That was a whole different fiasco- we didn't want anyone to get hurt because these things are extremely volotaile. We did get that part settled, but I just got angrier and angrier. What if my child had been playing with it when it did that. Luckily, it was turned off and in his backpack. This company, NeuTab, has absolutely no customer service- only an email address that no one responds to.

Now, it is very important to understand that this is not user error. We are very careful with electronics with the kids. Tbomb did nothing to cause this. This kid can use a tablet better than most adults. This is a faulty product that should not be on the market and I'm sure they knew about this problem. Unfortunately, they just do not care. I want this product off of the market and for people to know about this problem. If you have one of these, please dispose of it before someone gets hurt. I'm not looking for anything except for the company to acknowledge that this product should not be available. Luckily, it is no longer available on Amazon. You can see my Amazon review here.

I mean- seriously- how often are you going to feed your whole family for free? One time- at Cow Appreciation Day. Just dress as a cow and get free food!

Unfortunately, we'll be skipping this year and I'm so sad! Don't worry though, I've gathered my favorite ideas from Instagram into one place, just for you!

Press Release: Scott Statement on the 43rd Anniversary of Title IX

Scott Statement on the 43rd Anniversary of Title IX

WASHINGTON – Ranking Member Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (D-VA), issued the following statement on 43rd anniversary of the enactment of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972:

“Today marks the 43rd anniversary of the passage of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, landmark legislation that was enacted to remove barriers to educational opportunities on the basis of one’s sex.

“The law states: ‘No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.’

“While Title IX is commonly acknowledged for breaking down barriers for women and girls in sports, its vast impact goes beyond that. Title IX has opened doors for girls to pursue opportunities in STEM, protects against sexual violence on college campuses, and holds institutions of learning at every level accountable for the well-being of their students.

“Although we have made great strides in education equality, there is still work to be done to rid campuses of sexual violence and to eliminate gender-based discrimination. Earlier this year, the Obama Administration issued guidance emphasizing the responsibility of school districts, colleges and universities to designate well-qualified, well-trained Title IX coordinators. The updated guidance is a step in the right direction to help ensure that institutions are in compliance with the law by empowering Title IX coordinators to identify and address any patterns or systemic problems in education programs.

“As we reflect on the progress we have made, we must remember that all students have the right to access a quality education, free from discrimination and harassment.”

Be Prepared With The #Kyasi Stylus

Disclaimer: I received a product to review. All opinions are my own.

Kyasi New York Laser Pen Stylus Combo MicroFiber ULTRA stylus Premium LavenderI was pretty excited when I recieved this particular stylus. I am always juggling between my pointer, pen, and stylus during a presentation. This usique stylus by Kyasi keeps me focus, organized, and looking put together. Not only is it beautiful, but the functionality out weighs everything.

The custom microfiber stylus tip allows for much for functionality when writing or drawing than most of the stylus on the market. The quality of this tip is not like one that you would find anywhere else.

The pen is of very high quality, and the laser pointer is easy to use and on point. With the clip, this makes the perfect gift for all techies in your life. The batteries are even included!

When I hold this stylus, I feel like I'm holding a premium pen. Most of the stylus I have used feel to light and it makes it hard to control- with the Kyasi stylus, that is not a problem.

Children's Miracle Network & Walmart: Making Lives Better and #Giveaway

Disclaimer: This is a sponsored post. However, all opinions are my own. The Walmart gift cards and information have been provided by P&G.

When we think of children, we think of laughter, playing, and a carefree life. Sadly, this isn't the case for all children. Some children spend much of their life in a hospital. The treatment they receive can mean life or death and the hospital they spend their time in can dramatically increase their quality of life and even attitude about life. This is one of the reasons that the Children's Miracle Network is so important in our country and in the lives of children that are fighting for their lives.

The Children's Miracle Network is so successful because of the support of the community. When we donate or purchase those little name signs that go in store windows, we are helping to make a child's life a little better. The infographic below shows stats about Children's Miracle Network Member Hospitals. For example, did you know that 1 out of 10 children are treated in these hospitals every year?

I find the stories of the children that have spent so much time at the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals truly inspiring. If we all had this attitude, the world would be a much better place. I ran across this story about a 13-year-old boy from South Carolina and wanted to share it with you.

It was a moment fit for the silver screen: during the final play of a county basketball game, the ball was passed to Keldon. The world stopped as he took his shot and — score! The ball swooshed through the net and the crowd erupted with resounding applause.

Keldon’s life could be compared to a very challenging game of hoops. At 6 years old, extreme headaches and vomiting led him to the hospital, where he was quickly diagnosed with a brain tumor. This marked the beginning of 18 months of chemotherapy and the implantation of two shunts at the front of his skull. As Keldon’s treatment continued, his family sought comfort in learning about cancer and blood disorders via the hospital’s child life program funded in part by Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.

While Keldon’s tumor remains benign and inoperable, the aspiring NBA player’s recovery is as miraculous as the moment he made his winning shot. He is full of life and brings a smile to everyone he meets.

Baby Clothes Makers Ensure that Even the Youngest Can Be Fans

In some cities around the country, baseball is more than just something that one roots for. It's a religion, where kids learn to love their team before they can walk. This is true in Chicago, New York, Boston, and certainly in St Louis. With that in mind, St Louis Cardinals baby clothes are becoming more and more popular over time. There are many different options for dressing a young slugger, whether he's too young to walk or heading into the toddler years.

Many parents today have found that buying full uniform outfits is difficult. While you can certainly find a full outfit for a young child, this becomes extremely tough when babies are involved. The good news is that today's online providers have given these people many more options. You can buy a onesie that will allow your kid to sport the logo of the Cardinals. You might even be able to buy a small jersey and throw on some shorts to make the outfit look complete. Many parents today are into small hats, which can come in handy when they take their kid out into the sun.

MLB-themed baby clothes are both cute and functional. They provide the ability for a young child to move and to show off your favorite team, fitting into what the city loves the most. The good news, too, is that these clothes happen to be affordable. Those who have walked into a Major League gift shop lately understand that it's not cheap to be a Cardinals fan today. If you're an adult who wants a jersey, shirt, or hat, you should be prepared to shell out a good bit of money. This is not always the case when it comes to baby clothes. Right online, you can find deals that will allow you to show off your Cardinals spirit while not breaking the bank.

These kinds of savings are especially important considering that kids can grow out of clothes so quickly. They won't be in their old size for long, so you'll want to save cash in order to purchase an outfit the next level up. The Internet's made shopping cheaper and easier, so you can do your best to be a good baseball loving parent in the heart of the Midwest.

Celebrate With Tipsy Elves

Disclaimer: I received a product to review. All opinions are my own.

I was contacted by one of my favorite companies about reviewing a line they now offer. Tipsy Elves is now offering a July 4th line, and I am beyond excited. Every year I insist on a new July 4th tank top. We throw a barbeque and do some serious celebrating. For me, the celebration starts when I pick out my tank for the year. I have my tank now and we are already celebrating.

I already loved Tipsy Elves, but with their new July 4th line, I'm even more in love!

I was already a fan of Tipsy Elves because of their hilarious Christmas items, but their Independence Day line is just as amazing. From onesies (for adults) to tanks and t-shirts, and even fun accessories, Tipsy Elves has your July 4th outfit covered.

I received the  "Party Like A Patriot" tank and the "American Flag Tank," and couldn't be happier. Of course, I shared the American Flag Tank with my mother in law and she loves it just as much as I did. These thank tops are super comfortable. I've taken to wearing my Party Like A Patriot tank any time I want to be comfortable, including running errands and long car rides. The American Flag Tank would even be adorable as a cover-up. The fabric is really soft and the shape is perfect. The flowiness of the American Flag Tank is gorgeous and the "racer back" style of the Party Like A Patriot shirt is perfect or summer barbeques.

Their prices are great and there is a design for everyone. I already loved Tipsy Elves for Christmas, but they are now my go-to for all holiday shirts!
