Everyone Needs a Toolbox

The First Basic Toolbox

Whether you are buying your first home or have moved into your first apartment, you need to have a set of tools that will help you perform the most basic tasks. Although there are many “starter” tool sets on the market, they often have lower quality tools and often don’t have all the items you need for your first toolbox. In addition, it is important to buy better quality tools, rather than the cheapest on the shelf in order to have them last longer.

The First Tool Box

The first thing you need to purchase is a tool box that will allow you to keep your tools all in one location and keep them organized. Most department and hardware stores sell reasonably priced toolboxes, or you can search online at sites like elitetoolboxes.com. The box should be sturdy enough to hold the tools you need but light enough that you will be able to carry it from room to room even with tools inside.

First Set of Tools

For your first toolbox, choose the following tools:

• Adjustable wrench – a wrench with a jaw that expands so that you can use it on different sized nuts and bolts.
• Allen wrench – in both American and Metric sizes. These are L-shaped bars with a hexagonal head at each end used to turn bolts and screws.
• Phillips-head screwdrivers – These are the screwdrivers with the end that looks like a cross. You should purchase a mini, a small and medium size.
• Flat-head screwdrivers – These are the screwdrivers with a flat end and should be purchased in similar sizes to Phillips-head screwdrivers.
• Hammer – It is not necessary to purchase a large hammer for your first toolbox, as you will likely use it for hanging pictures or other light duty jobs.
• Small level – A level comes in handy for many jobs, including hanging pictures.
• Needle-nosed pliers – The pointy ends of needle-nosed pliers are perfect for tucking in ends or fixing items that need a smaller grip.
• Tape measure – This is one item often overlooked in toolboxes, but can be invaluable, especially to a new homeowner.
• Utility knife or box cutter- You will be surprised how much use you get out of this tool, but use it carefully as the blades are extremely sharp.

Other Utility Items

Other items that are beneficial for small repairs around a home or apartment are duct tape, masking tape, small nails and screws, as well as a small, sturdy stepstool or ladder. Flashlights, extra batteries and light bulbs are also good to have on hand as is a spool of sturdy rope and rubber bands in assorted sizes.

Use this starter tool set to put together the perfect graduation or wedding gift as tools are often overlooked when someone is setting up a new household. When it is time to hang that picture or fix that broken table leg, the recipient will be very grateful for your thoughtfulness.
