Disclaimer: I received products from Thirty-One Gifts. All opinions are my own.

Decorating a shared room is never easy, especially when the room is shared between a boy and a girl. Here are some tips to help you navigate.

Thirty-One Gifts has a lot of coordinating colors and patterns that make decorating and organizing a child's room easier- this even works for a shared boy/girl room.

  1. Focus on a neutral color
  2. Use accent colors for each child
  3. Have a clear divider
  4. Use matching furniture
  5. Choose a common theme that can be customized for each side.
  6. Get the kids involved- you will be surprised at how much alike they are
  7. Keep it simple
  8. Shop for both children at the same time- finding coordinating items is much easier
  9. Focus on organizing- things can get out of hand quickly with a shared room
  10. Use the same comforter, but individual throw pillows and accents
  11. Choose an accent rug for each child- this will help define the spaces
  12. Toys can make excellent decor
  13. Have an accent wall for each child
  14. Choose a few matching accessories, like frames, lamps, etc.
  15. Focus on their personalities and let them shine through
  16. With a clear divider, matching furniture, and neutral paint color, each side could be decorated completely different.
  17. Consider each of their needs in the room
  18. Choose neutral lighting, curtains, etc.
  19. Mirror the sides
  20. Bring out the children's similarities
  21. Allow them their privacy with a curtain (if they have loft beds, they can have a private area under them)
  22. A bulletin board for each is a great way to let them express themselves while still keeping the decor complimentary.
  23. Consider crafting decor
  24. Consider the children's strengths and hobbies and decorate with this in mind.
  25. Focus on the beds and make them complimentary
  26. Have a neutral area for shared items- A TV stand is a good option for this
  27. Use a different quote on the same size canvas above each bed. (We did "Be A Unicorn In A Field of Horse" for Koda and "A Little Boy Is The Only Thing God Can Use To Make A Man" on Tbomb's)
  28. If you shop for used furniture (my favorite), paint them matching colors.
  29. Make sure each child has adequate storage
  30. Toys can make great decor
  31. Make sure they are happy with it- that is more important than making it match!
