Decorating a shared room is never easy, especially when the room is shared between a boy and a girl. Here are some tips to help you navigate.
Thirty-One Gifts has a lot of coordinating colors and patterns that make decorating and organizing a child's room easier- this even works for a shared boy/girl room.
- Focus on a neutral color
- Use accent colors for each child
- Have a clear divider
- Use matching furniture
- Choose a common theme that can be customized for each side.
- Get the kids involved- you will be surprised at how much alike they are
- Keep it simple
- Shop for both children at the same time- finding coordinating items is much easier
- Focus on organizing- things can get out of hand quickly with a shared room
- Use the same comforter, but individual throw pillows and accents
- Choose an accent rug for each child- this will help define the spaces
- Toys can make excellent decor
- Have an accent wall for each child
- Choose a few matching accessories, like frames, lamps, etc.
- Focus on their personalities and let them shine through
- With a clear divider, matching furniture, and neutral paint color, each side could be decorated completely different.
- Consider each of their needs in the room
- Choose neutral lighting, curtains, etc.
- Mirror the sides
- Bring out the children's similarities
- Allow them their privacy with a curtain (if they have loft beds, they can have a private area under them)
- A bulletin board for each is a great way to let them express themselves while still keeping the decor complimentary.
- Consider crafting decor
- Consider the children's strengths and hobbies and decorate with this in mind.
- Focus on the beds and make them complimentary
- Have a neutral area for shared items- A TV stand is a good option for this
- Use a different quote on the same size canvas above each bed. (We did "Be A Unicorn In A Field of Horse" for Koda and "A Little Boy Is The Only Thing God Can Use To Make A Man" on Tbomb's)
- If you shop for used furniture (my favorite), paint them matching colors.
- Make sure each child has adequate storage
- Toys can make great decor
- Make sure they are happy with it- that is more important than making it match!
Great shaare
