Book Review: National Geographic Books For Kids

Disclaimer: I received books to review. All my opinions are my own.

National Geographic books for kids have been a staple in our house. My son Tbomb only reads books he can learn something from. He is very rarely seen reading a novel, yet his nose is always stuck in one of his many National Geographic For Kids Almanacs. He has the past 4 years of them. Well, now 5 years. He still reads them all and loves them. he is always telling me new facts that he learns.

Those aren't the only Nat Geo books he has and he loves them all. I have fallen in love with the Encyclopedias!

National Geographic Kids Encyclopedia Of American Indian History And Culture

American Indian customs, stories, and history come to life in this important and authoritative reference, artfully designed and packaged for kids and students.

More than 160 tribes are featured in this outstanding new encyclopedia, which presents a comprehensive overview of the history of North America's Native peoples. From the Apache to the Zuni, readers will learn about each tribe's history, traditions, and culture, including the impact of European expansion across the land and how tribes live today. Features include maps of ancestral lands; timelines of important dates and events; fact boxes for each tribe; bios of influential American Indians such as Sitting Bull; sidebars on daily life, homes, food, clothing, jewelry, and games; Did You Know facts with photographs; and traditional Native stories. The design is compelling and colorful, packed with full-color photographs.

To help give kids the lay of the land, this reference is arranged by region, and all federally recognized tribes are included. Tribal members representing each region and experts at the National Museum of the American Indian at the Smithsonian Institution were involved in its creation. With nothing comparable available, it is sure to be a valuable resource for kids, students, librarians, and families.

Treasury Of Bible Stories

The timeless tales from the early books of the Bible (the Old Testament and Hebrew Bible) have captivated generations. In this lush storybook, the fresh voice of lyrical storyteller Donna Jo Napoli and the lavish artwork of Christina Balit bring classic stories to life for a young, modern audience.

Noah's Ark, Moses, David and Goliath, the ten plagues, Daniel and the lions' den, Jonah and the giant fish, and many more of the Bible's most powerful stories--27 in all--are compellingly retold in this beautifully illustrated treasury. Readers will be fascinated by the ancient people and events they encounter, surprised by some of the lesser known accounts revealed, and inspired by the lessons these tales impart. Stories cover important ground beyond religion, such as culture, history, and geography, and they touch on issues that remain relevant today--faith, loyalty, kindness, violence, generosity, greed, jealousy, and more. These accessible, readible stories give kids a rich picture of biblical times, which encourages them to think about our role in the world and to learn more.

Napoli's magicial storytelling is sure to ignite children's imaginations. Along with Balit's stunning art, this is a book kids will want to explore again and again--a classic that families can read aloud together.

Book Review: How Great Is Our God

Disclaimer: I received a book to review. All opinions are my own.

Tbomb loves science! I mean loves it, but he really struggles with why scientists tend to not believe in God. He says that if they will just read the Bible, they will understand more. I agree- he said what killed the dinosaurs isn't a mystery- it was the flood! He's so smart!

When I was offered How Great Is Our God, I knew that it would be perfect for him. We actually use it for our daily devotional in the morning when we start school and it is perfect!

A follow-up to his bestselling children's devotional, Indescribable, pastor Louie Giglio's How Great Is Our God offers 100 incredible new facts and devotions about God and science to stir your child's amazement for the Creator.

Show the children in your life the awe-inspiring connection between the natural world and the God who created it.

The bestselling children's devotional Indescribable: 100 Devotions About God and Science resonated with more than 200,000 kids, parents, and teachers. Now Louie Giglio offers 100 more devotions about God and science that will expand the curiosity of your 6- to 10-year-olds. Including amazing scientific facts, beautiful photography, fun illustrations, and simple activities, How Great Is Our God covers topics like

Space and time
Earth and weather
The human body
Animals
Plants
And more!

With this science devotional, which is based on Giglio's well-known "How Great Is Our God" and “Indescribable” messages, children will embark on a journey to discover more about God and His incredible creation. From the pink lake in Senegal to the earth's trip around the sun to the water-holding frog that can live up to five years without a drink, the wonders of the universe will deepen your kids’ appreciation for God's wild imagination.

I'm sure this book will be read again and again in our house and that the kids will get something new from each reading.

Book Review: Night Night Devotional

Disclaimer: I received a book to review. All opinions are my own.

In our house, books are loved. We read A LOT! Each night, I read a chapter from a book I want the kids to hear, read a devotional, and then they get to take turns picking a book to read. When I started Night Night Devotional, Tbomb insisted that he would read it to Koda each night. They love it and it is an awesome thing to see.

Bedtime is the perfect opportunity to snuggle your little ones close and remind them of God's presence and love. In this book of 100 devotions for kids ages 3–7, bestselling author Amy Parker and illustrator Virginia Allyn invite you to begin a tradition of prayer and devotions with your children to carry them through the years to come.

Each of the devotions in Night Night Devotions begins with a Bible verse and includes Night Night questions to encourage interaction with your children. If you want to use the book as a companion to Night Night Bible Stories, the devotions have corresponding titles that accompany each Bible story—with much more in between! Each devotion ends with a rhyming Night Night Prayer that emphasizes God’s love and care, such as . . .

Dear God, I love You more than

There are fishes in the sea,

But there's no way that I could love You

More than You love me!

Night night, God.

With cheerful, colorful artwork and sweet Night Night rhymes, this devotional is sure to become your family's new bedtime favorite.

We absolutely love it and I'm sure the kids will read it over and over again. Once Koda learns to read, I'm sure she will read it as well.

Holly Lane: Jewelry Inspired By Your Favorite Scripture

Disclaimer: I received a product to review. All opinions are my own.

I fell in love with Holly Lane Jewelry as soon as I opened the package.

I try to keep the words of Proverbs 31 in my heart and mind as I work my way through each day. Sometimes this is what I struggle with the most, besides praying about something and giving it over to God and not worrying. While I'm working on that, this Proverbs 31 necklace, especially the raw ruby, keeps it fresh. I often find myself touching my cross throughout the day. Now, I also touch this gorgeous necklace by Holly Lane and I'm reminded of these amazing words. I'm reminded daily about how I want to live my life and raise my daughter.

Our line of sterling silver Christian jewelry is intentionally designed to create opportunities to share Christ with others, and to be worn as a personal reflection of faith. Each piece is designed in central Virginia by jewelry artist Tiffany Scott who has based her designs on verses from the Bible in order to bring comfort to the wearer and be a representation of God's promises. These unique designs are meant to catch the attention of others and spark conversation about the verses they are based on.

Each piece of verse-based Holly Lane jewelry comes with a Story Card that features the verse reference on the front, and an explanation of the design's significance on the back. Tiffany's love for semiprecious gemstones shows through in her use of many different gems throughout the line. The Holly Lane line is designed so that the customer can put together their own personal combination of pendants, chains and bead drops based on the promises they are holding on to and how God is currently speaking to them in their lives.

Book Review: Only You Can Be You

Disclaimer: I received a book to review. All opinions are my own.

I haven't posted in quite some time. My daughter has been having some serious health issues. We have even had to pull her from public school. Turns out, she has an autoimmune disorder along with some other issues that we are waiting on a further diagnosis of, as well as some genetic testing. Bless her heart. Her symptoms seem to be getting worse as we play this waiting game. But, we still have good days as well. This is one of those- we played a lot today since she felt good. Now that she is in the bed, I can get some work done.

This Book: Only You Can Be You has been a blessing to our family. As many of you know, Kodabug has other problems besides these medical issues, including expressive communication disorder, anxiety, OCD, spd, and some issues with her fine motor development. Koda was being bullied some, but we would just read her this book and she would feel much better about herself!

Some kids like to dance and laugh out loud, and some sit quietly and make up stories in their heads—but we're all different, and that's okay because the maker of everything made us this way!

In their first picture book, bestselling author Sally Clarkson and her son Nathan encourage children on the journey to discovering their strengths. Mother and son duo draw on themes from their first book, Different, the emotive story of Nathan's experiences growing up with mental illness and learning disabilities and Sally's journey to loving him unconditionally. With the powerful truth that what makes you different makes you great, Only You Can Be You will help children embrace their differences and celebrate the differences in others.

The irresistible rhymes paired with Tim Warnes's whimsical illustrations encourage your children with the reassurance they're looking for in their own uniqueness. Whether they are quiet or artistic, funny or boisterous, your children will love this heartwarming read that assures them that they're wonderful exactly as they are.

What a wonderful book!

Stress-Free Traveling Tips for Parents Who Are on a Budget

Photo via Pixabay by Free-Photos

Traveling with your partner and children can be a wonderful way to connect, have fun, and get away from the stresses of life for a little while. Hitting the road with everyone, however, can be stressful in itself if you aren’t prepared. When you’re on a budget, things can get especially sticky because you can rack up the costs when you’re traveling pretty quickly. It’s important to keep in mind that this trip is for you and your loved ones to make the most of your time together, but how do you stay focused on having fun when you’re tired and in a strange place?

The key is to prepare well. A good plan will allow you to channel your energy into things that will improve your time away from home, so give yourself some time to think about how the trip can benefit you. It will also help to think about ways to save money from the very beginning, including when you’re booking a place to stay. Not only will this allow you to find the best deals, but it will also help you continue to save throughout the trip.

Read on to find out how to reduce stress -- and your expenses -- when traveling with your loved ones.

Look for affordable car insurance

You want to make sure you and your family are financially taken care of if you get into an accident during your travels, but you also don’t want to spend a lot of money on your car insurance to get full coverage. The good news is you can get sufficient coverage and save money; you just have to do your research. You can start by gathering quotes from various insurance companies to determine the best deal. Make sure that each quote includes full coverage and that they all share the same deductible.

Use this time to reconnect

It’s an unavoidable fact that when we get busy in our daily lives and are coping with stress, it gets harder and harder to keep communication open with our loved ones. This breakdown can lead to bigger issues, so it’s important to find time to slow down and reconnect. Use your travel time to benefit your relationship, especially if you are new parents. According to Kindred Bravely, many moms worry about having sex after giving birth, that there will be pain or that they will be too tired to experience the same amount of intimacy they once did. While this is common for many women, it’s crucial to talk to your partner and keep those lines of communication open.

Go with a rental home

Gone are the days when our only options for travel accommodations involved a hotel or condo. Now, there are lots of different places to stay no matter where you go, and many of them are extremely cost-efficient. One of the best ways to save money is to rent a vacation home because it will provide you with plenty of places to sleep as well as a full kitchen in which to cook your meals. It will also help to reduce stress if you’re traveling with small children because you’ll have more room to spread out and won’t have to worry about the noise level the way you would in a hotel.

Plan carefully

From a strictly monetary standpoint, it’s always preferable to plan out a trip rather than wing it. Knowing what to expect will help you prepare for what you’ll need to spend. Look online to find out more about the activities you want to take part in, and read the fine print carefully when buying tickets to events and theme parks, as they may be non-refundable or only be usable on certain dates.

Stick to your routine

No matter how laid-back your little ones are about traveling, there will almost always be times when hunger, exhaustion, or the stress of being in an unfamiliar place gets to them and causes meltdowns. This is one of the biggest stressors parents face on a trip, but you can help to prevent it by sticking as closely to your normal schedule as possible. Naps, bedtime, meals, and nighttime routines -- brushing teeth, reading a story -- should be kept the same if possible, and you might keep inexpensive snacks on hand to help curb hunger on outings. This will help your kiddos stay on track for the duration of the trip so they can have fun.

Staying stress-free while traveling isn’t always an easy task when you have young children, but by planning ahead, you can make things much easier for the whole family and save money during the planning process. Remember to keep communication open with your partner for the duration so that you’re both on the same page.

Book review: I Am Brave

Disclaimer: I received a book to review. All opinions are my own.

My children have arrived at the ages where outside influences are one of my concerns, especially with Koda starting public school. I can't always be aware of who she is around and who is influencing her. I have recently been shocked at the number of kids their ages that do not believe in God. So, how do you battle this? You give your children the tools to make decisions and to feel secure in their faith. That is why I was so excited about You Are Brave. Even for Tbomb, this devotional is a wonderful tool for them. I pray that this will be Koda's friend as she ages and she understands what it is to be a "Brave Girl."

It's a tough time to be a tween. Body image struggles, peer pressure, social media, and confusion about what truth is and why it matters can make growing up harder than ever. How do you stand firm in what you believe? What does it mean to be brave in your faith? What does it look like to love others? Finding answers to the most challenging questions can help tween girls thrive as they grow into brave young women of God.

I Am Brave invites girls ages 8–12 to join the Brave Girls—Hope, Glory, Faith, Gracie, and Honor—as they grow closer to God every day. The latest book in the popular Brave Girls series, I Am Brave includes journaling prompts, devotions, and lots of great questions to help girls learn more about who God is and who they are.

The Brave Girls are ordinary girls who are stronger and more courageous because of God's love and guidance. I Am Brave will help your own young reader speak up for truth, stand up for faith and live out the real meaning of godly bravery.

Getting Ready for Winter

School has started, the kids birthdays are organized, the house is decorated for Halloween/ Autumn. What's next? Well, before we start worrying about Christmas decor and getting organized for the holidays, we like to get all ready for winter. This ensures that we are good to go, especially if we get the rare snow before Christmas (usually our snow is in February, but a couple of years ago, we had snow around Thanksgiving). This means getting the house, car, yard, pets, work gear, and kids ready for winter. It can be quite the task, but this year, Cozy Winters is going to make life so much easier. I can find all the handy winter things I need in one place.

First, on the list, this year is to get Ice Cleats for the whole family. I never worried about it before, but since my husband does construction and they start early, they will be handy for him to have, plus a lot of the time he has to handle things around the property, no matter the weather. Also, this year, I will be walking snapper to the bus at 6 am, so the two of us will definitely benefit. Why leave Tbomb out?

Because Cozy Winters will be my one-stop-shop, I'll also be able to get a couple of heated dog beds, heated car seats, cozy socks, and everything else I'll need to get the house ready for winter. I might actually enjoy the snow this year (well, sitting inside with a cup of coffee watching the kids throw snow balls at daddy).

Disclaimer: I received a book to review. All opinions are my own.

A while back, I had the honor of reviewing the BibleForce Bible with stories of the heroes from the Bible. My son loved it and read it every night. When the opportunity arose to review the BibleForce Devotional, I knew that I had to participate and I am so glad I did.

As kids read about the heroes of the Bible, they'll see ways they can be heroes for God as well.

BibleForce Devotional offers a fresh, bright graphic-novel style that will interest boys and girls alike and will be the perfect way to engage young readers who want an active, exciting devotional. It's a great book to read together and is simple enough for young readers to read on their own. Kids won't be able to put down this book! Jump into the story of God’s Word, and become an amazing hero for God today with BibleForce Devotional!

I have often heard Tbomb reading to Snapper, explaining the stories and lessons to her, and even explaining why they are heroes, just like Spiderman. The First Five Signs I Taught My Kids

I've always loved learning sign language. I had the awesome opportunity in the fifth grade to take a class, so it started a true love. In fact, if I ever go back and finish college, I would love to minor in American Sign Language and tutor special needs children and parents that are homeschooling.

When Tbomb was a baby, I taught him a handful of signs when he first started trying to talk. I taught more, food, drink, and love. With snapper, things were a little different. I didn't teach her in the beginning like I had intended to. I had one I was homeschooling and I had my plate full. I wish I had done it anyway.

Well, when she still wasn't making any noises at 2, we were getting concerned. We realized then how quiet of a baby she really was. While we were doing testing and trying to figure out what was going on with her, I started teaching her sign language. I felt like this would give her a way of communicating and it really did help not only ease her frustration and mine, but I feel like it allowed us to bond in a unique way.

When we decided to teach her, I put a lot of thought into which ones to teach her first. They needed to be simple, be useful, and be fun. She picked them up easily and even started teaching family members so they could communicate with her. It felt good.

Here are the signs we settled with for her first five.

Each word is linked to a video showing the proper way to sign it.

1. EAT

2. DRINK

3. MORE

4. PLEASE

5. GIRAFFE (Giraffes are her favorite animal and have been since she was about 3 months old so we thought it would be fun if she learned the sign for something she loved!)

She picked up sign language really easily and that is actually why she was not diagnosed with Autism by her developmental pediatrician. She wanted to communicate and showed that the ability was there- just not yet for speaking.

Here are some free resources to help teach your children to sign.

I have some pretty calendar and planner printables to share over the next few months. I hope you enjoy!

Covenant Kids Review & Win A Copy!

Disclaimer: I received a book to review. All opinions are my own.

We started our homeschool back yesterday. One thing that always excites me about a new school year is the Bible Study books I pick out. Tbomb loves learning about the Bible so much that we usually go through several different ones throughout the year, so I'm excited to start this series with him.

Tbomb is loving this series, and so am I. It is written like a comic book, really engaging the children. Also, because it is about kids, it really draws them in and allows them to associate better with the story.

Tbomb and I have often talked about how lucky we are to live in America, where we are free to learn about and worship God. I have explained that in some places, they do not have that freedom. We have also discussed what we would do if we were not allowed to learn about and worship God. We've discussed how hard it would be and what God would want from us. He has always insisted that no one could stop him and I think that is one thing that is going to make these books a real winner in our home.

Covenant Kids: Book 1 The Law, by Andrew Youngblood brings up some touchy subjects, but subjects that Christians face and I believe this book will be essential to helping young Christians not only grow in their belief but be able to stand strong in it. They will realize that no matter what, God is with us and walks beside us.

Naomi lives in a place where it has recently become illegal to study or even talk about the faith outside of church on Sunday. But one law can't stop Naomi. She forms a study group with three other teenagers to learn more about the Bible. As they learn the stories of the Old Testament, they realize God's plan to bring everyone into a loving relationship with him through his Covenant. But not everyone likes this "Good News", and Naomi, Pavel, José, and Rose soon find themselves in the middle of a dangerous plot to enforce the new law against religion at any cost.

Perfect for young readers ages seven to thirteen, Covenant Kids--Book One: The Law is both an adventure-filled graphic novel and a thoughtful guide through the Bible's main stories. The first in a series of twelve, this book covers the biblical stories from Creation through Abraham. Author Andrew Youngblood has a degree in theology and experience both teaching Scripture and running schools. Designed to show how exciting and beautiful the Old Testament is, Covenant Kids reveals what the Bible is really about--God's great love for each of us. (from Amazon)

Courage For Life: Get This App Today

Disclaimer: I was sent a book to facilitate a review. All opinions are my own.

Courage For Life is a wonderful organization started by Ann White. She shares her story of redemption and provides resources to help give people the courage they need to believe in God and thrive in life through God.
My calling is simple. Point people to the hope and freedom that can only be found in Jesus as revealed in His Word. That Word—the Bible—is foundational! You have to be in it to be equipped, and you have to be in it to understand the change that is required in your life.
It’s complete belief that God is who He says He is, and that His character is as it has been revealed. Appropriating those truths for yourself is the beginning of finding your courage for life. – Ann White

They offer Bible studies, devotions, books, and even do Missions. Courage For Life has recently released an additional resource to their offerings. The Courage For Life Bible App is my latest must-have app. Believe me, it is going to be yours as well!

The Courage For Life Bible App is the first female-voiced Bible App. It is the entire Bible in one app with an easy to use interface. You can either read or listen to the scriptures. I love having those options. When you are listening, it is a voice that you can easily listen to, not one that you will tune out after the first couple of sentences.

I love reading my bible and being able to make notes, journal, or whatever else my heart desires. However, bringing my Bible along isn't always feasible, especially if I'm worried about it going missing. I can take the Courage For Life Bible App wherever I go. I can read in waiting rooms and listen in the car. Also, on nights when I'm up with the kids, I can listen without a light keeping them awake and be in any position I need to be in. I love having this app at my fingertips and you will too!

Ann White, the creator of the Courage For Life Bible App, has released a book as well. She is Strong and Courageous is a wonderful devotion book that will lead you on a 90-day transformational journey to know God more personally, understand His Word clearly, and apply His truth powerfully. Outdoor Tech: Gear For Adventurers

Disclaimer: I received products to review. All opinions are my own.

I received some products from Outdoor Tech to try out with my family and our Bigfoot research team, the Carolina Cryptid Crew. I was so excited to get these and we have already used them so much and will continue to use them. I'm so excited to share them with you too!

I received the Kodiak Ultra and the Kodiak Plus Ultra power banks, as well as the Kodiak Power Station. Let me tell you. These things are tough- no wonder they use Bigfoot as their logo- there is no beating them!

This awesome power bank is waterproof (as long as the lid is closed), dustproof, dirt proof, and super-duper rugged. I love the rubberized coating on them, as well as the bigfoot of course! You can charge almost any small electronics with the 7800mAh battery. I was also shocked at how quick it charges. It also boasts a super bright LED light that has high beam, low beam and an SOS function. See, its even a survival tool!

It even has smart charging technology that will determine the best charging output for your device. Many devices can even be charged up to 7 times with one charge of the power bank. We have charged phones, tablets, and go pros with it! Plus, it looks good with the camo!

The Kodiak Plus Ultra is larger than the Kodiak Ultra, but it also packs a more powerful punch. It is just as rugged and dirt, dust, and waterproof. However, it has a 12,800mAh battery for more charging power. This one is my favorite because I can charge any of my gear that uses a USB- my phone, tablet, action camera, body camera, night vision camera, flashlight, and more. I can also charge them more times. It is also quick to charge, which really impressed me. I can throw it in my backpack and not worry about anything happening it, especially when I am rummaging around for gear.

It has the same 100 lumen light with high beam, low beam, and SOS/ strobe functions as the Kodiak Ultra as well. It has USB C and USB quick charge ports as well. It also has the intelligent charging capabilities and will protect your device and the Kodiak Plus Ultra to guarantee a longer battery life.

I usually make the kids use their own power banks because I don't want mine messed up. Not anymore. I take this one along and anyone can use it. I send the Kodiak Ultra to work with my husband a lot- so he can charge his phone, light, or whatever else he needs on the job site.

These are used for fun, home, expeditions, ghost hunting, on construction sites, camping, by the pool, and whatever else we decide to do. Wherever we go, we have power. What an amazing concept.

I could marry this thing. I'm so in love. I think my husband is jealous, but he loves it too! This power station is amazing and we make sure to keep it charged.

Our power went out and they were having a hard time getting all the power back on. We were worried about the bearded dragon not having its heat rock, so we plugged it into this. It may have saved his life. He's about 12, but we don't want anything to happen to him anyway. I've also used it outside for my laptop and for lights when we have an expedition. We like to have one area that is lit and it worked perfectly to light up the area. Believe it or not, this one charges quickly as well.
The Kodiak Power Station allows for AC power in remote locations for convenient portable power. It provides 100 Watts of peak power. Compact and lightweight, the Kodiak Power Station weighs just 2.5 lbs. It is coated in a rugged rubberized plastic cover so you don’t have to worry about durability. Whether you’re camping in the wild, dealing with a blackout or outrunning zombies during the apocalypse, the Kodiak Power Station will keep you powered up or charged in any situation.
It has everything you need for portable power. This is great for us because when we go to events, we do not always have power and when we sometimes camp with the Carolina Cryptid Crew, and that is always primitive camping. I can plug in my computer, lights, air mattress pump, or even the coffee pot!

This thing is powerful and can take on anything you throw at it. Plug just about anything with a USB, 110V, or even 12V auto. This would be a perfect gift for anyone that travels, drivers, campers, hikers, paranormal investigators, beach bums, bigfoot researchers, survivalists, or anyone else on your list. Even just for in case the power goes out.

It is also compatible with a 24W solar panel, so you can keep it charged as long as it is needed. It is a rugged design, lightweight has a carry handle, fuel gauge indicator, and comes with a charging adapter. Seriously, I'm in love!

Outdoor Tech is even having a special offer right now. If you go to their website and order anything, you get a free cuff beanie (yes, with bigfoot on it!) All you have to do is add it to your cart and there is an awesome little button at the top to make that easier.

Plus, I have some awesome Outdoor Tech gear to give away. If you are going to be at the Bigfoot Festival in Westminster, SC in October, find me and I'll be happy to share!

Disclaimer: I received a product to review. All opinions are my own.

I was beyond thrilled to be sent the 2019-20 Academic Planner: You Have To SEE Time In Order To Manage It + Accessories from Order Out Of Chaos. I knew that this would be the perfect tool to teach my ADHD Tbomb organization and time management skills. I love the way the Order Out Of Chaos company works and their motto: “We are not in the planner business; we are in the student business!" These planners are designed by a leading time management expert WITH students FOR students.

Not only do I absolutely love this planner for my son, but the tools that come with it are wonderful! Kids love stickers, so they definitely want to use them, which makes using the planner fun! Also, once they start using the planner and see how much easier things are for them, they want to use it more.

The amazing thing about Order Out Of Chaos is that they are so much more than a planner company. This company strives to help parents and children. I love that I can visit the website and learn how to teach my child good time management skills.  They have many products, programs, workshops, and webinars to help parents help their children learn the skills they need to be successful in school and in their adult life. Although they tend to skew towards the ADHD children, their products and programs are wonderful for all students and all types of learners.

The founder of Order Out Of Chaos, Leslie Josel, is actually ranked as the #15 expert in the time management world. She is working on her third book, writes a weekly column for ADDitude magazine (Dear Family Coach), is a Family Circle parenting expert, and even travels the world speaking on topics that parents and students face in the world today. Its no wonder people trust Leslie.

This planner is just that- a planner. There are no extra things like pictures, vocabulary, or math problems to distract your student. That is exactly what I wanted for my son- he is too easily distracted and items with cartoons or unnecessary information does not work for him. This planner is just what it is supposed to do- help your child plan their time. I believe this is the best academic planner for students

You are not just getting a planner, you get access to so much more than that. You also get access to a FREE Planner Productivity Workbook filled with worksheets like — planner pointers, project planning guides, homework helpers, etc. — that supports the student and their use of the planner. There is also a wonderful video that helps explain it all. It shows Leslie and her son arguing over homework and hits on all the man points. Plus, we can all relate.

Order Out of Chaos is so wonderful, they are offering a 20% discount.

Just use code PLANNER20 on their website.

(Please note that the PLANNER20 deal code is a one-time-only code good on any purchase of JUST planners.)

Stephen Joseph Gifts: The Best In Kids' Gear

Disclaimer: I received items to review from Stephen Joseph Gifts. All opinions are my own.

I discovered Stephen Joseph Gifts looking for new rain boots for the kids. They have the absolute cutest rain boots. Seriously- it doesn't get any cuter. They sent the kids rain boots, matching lunchboxes, and snapper an iridescent pouch! We are smitten and will be purchasing more items from Stephen Joseph Gifts! Here's why:

Stephen Joseph Rain Boots:

These rain boots are of very high quality. The plastic is nice and thick, unlike many, which you can almost see-through. The handles do not pull loose, and the designs are absolutely adorable. I also love that they have a soft lining. It makes them more comfortable and I think would keep their feet warmer as well.

The kids love how easy they are to run and move in. Their others have been clunky and not good for running. Now, they can run up the driveway, run through mud puddles, and be all-around moving and shaking kids. They also have great support, making them perfect for wearing all day.

They are very high quality. Their last rain boots tore up before they outgrew them. There is no doubt that they will outgrow these first and I will be passing them along to some other kids.

Stephen Joseph Lunch Boxes:

I am absolutely in love with these lunch boxes. Actually, I don't see why these lunch boxes won't last a few years for the kiddos. Since Snapper will be in public school, I know that I will have to send her lunch occasionally, as she is my very picky eater (she hates most meat, pasta, and tomatoes). On the days I pack Snapper's lunch, I'll pack Tbomb one too and we can have a picnic.

I love the features of these lunch boxes. Not only is the insulation nice and thick without being bulky and heavy, but it is easy for the kiddos to open as well. There is a flat pocket on the front for cutlery, napkins, wipes, or whatever else is needed. There is also a water bottle holder on the outside, which I just love.

Let's not forget that the designs are beautiful and coordinate with other Stephen Joseph Gifts items!

Stephen Joseph Irridescent Pouch:

This iridescent pouch from Stephen Joseph Gifts is amazing. Not only is it perfect for so many things, but it is of great construction. The plastic is nice and thick with secure stitching. Once again, the designs coordinate with other Stephen Joseph Gifts products.

I think this pouch would be good for travel, a purse, possibly a tech case, and many other uses. I'm going to use it to put an extra change of clothing for Snapper in her backpack. She has some stomach problems and may on occasion need a change of clothes. This pouch will keep them together, it has a handle for carrying and matches her other items. There will be no doubt that the pouch and contents belong to snapper.

As you are shopping for back to school, fall supplies, birthdays, and Christmas, be sure to keep Stephen Joseph Gifts in mind for beautiful, quality, and useful gifts.

Seasons of Life: Will Therapy Help This Season?

I have come to realize that there is more to the "seasons of life" than ages and general stages like young adulthood, parenting, empty nesting, and retirement. There are smaller seasons that pop up. Kind of like an "Indian summer," have you had these short burst seasons?

Right now I'm going through one. There always seems to be a lot going on in life and that's fine with me. We chug along, but now there is something else going on that has just completely thrown me for a loop. I'm going in the morning for some tests. One is my yearly ECG to make sure my Ventricular Diastolic Dysfunction is not progressing. The others are scary.

I have to have a followup diagnostic mammogram because my initial mammogram showed an inflamed mammary node (lymph node in the breast tissue). I also have to have an ultrasound on my neck because I have a really swollen lymph node in my neck- it is actually starting to hurt. I also have swollen lymph nodes under my arm. The bloodwork after is to check my white blood count because it has been really high with no reason to be, so they are monitoring it.

To say I'm worried is an understatement. I'm scared to death but trying my best not to show it. I don't want my kids to see me worried because they will worry and there is no need for that. Also, because my MIL has been through her breast cancer/ lymphodema journey the past year, I don't want the family worrying. But, keeping it bottled up is not a good idea either.

This is the kind of situation that therapy can be like an air conditioner in your Indian summer. Do you need someone to talk to? Do you need to vent? Do you need help finding a solution to a problem? Therapy can be all of this. Even better, now there are online therapy options that you can do when and where it is convenient for you.

I urge you to reach out to an online therapist if you are going through your own Indian summer and need help. There is help out there. Please reach out.

Why Kids Need Rain Boots

I had never really worried about rain boots before, but I got the kids some at a thrift store about a year ago and soon realized that they would not be without them. It didn't take long for them to go through those cheap and used rain boots. Stephen Joseph stepped in and sent each kid a pair. You would not believe how often my kids wear their rain boots. I was recently asked why our rain boots are a vital part of the kids' wardrobe. Well, they need them and here is why!

1. Rain Boots are great to keep by the door and slip on to run outside.

2. My husband doesn't let the kids walk in the woods without their rain boots on. They help protect their feet and ankles, give them extra traction, and keep their feet from getting wet.

3. Yard work and farm work- rain boots or "muck boots" are perfect for this kind of work because they can we cleaned easily and keep their feet dry.

4. Exploring around your community and on vacation can demand rain boots. Are you going to botanical gardens, petting zoos, caves, tunnels, creeks, and other outdoor attractions? Consider lugging rain boots with you, I'm sure it will be worth it.

5. Purchasing a good pair of rain boots, like Stephen Joseph rain boots, can make running errands and going to school on a rainy day a much simpler process. These rain boots wear like tennis shoes- they are not clunking around like with their old ones and they are comfortable enough to wear all day!

Lunch Packing For The Win

I do not plan on sending lunch with Snapper every day this year. However, she is a very picky eater so I need to plan ahead and know what days to send lunch so she will have something to eat. The thing is that if she doesn't like it, she'll go hungry and that is not good for a little one at school. I'm getting organized now so that I know I'll be packing winning lunches!

Here are 20 tips that I remember from my childhood, from packing adventure lunches for homeschool, from packing my hubby's lunch, and things I just think will work!

1. Gather your supplies. Stock up on Ziploc bags, brown paper bags, saran wrap, etc. If you are using reusable items like I plan to, be sure to have everything you need on hand. It wouldn't hurt to have a box of Ziploc bags just in case though. Stephen Joseph Gifts has adorable coordinating lunch packing supplies. They have everything you need in one stop!

2. Put all of your supplies in a basket that you can easily move to your work station or store them close to your work station. Include a sharpie- you never know when you need to write on something and this way it is handy. We actually keep a couple in the kitchen drawer for easy access.

3. Label everything that you are using that is reusable so that it comes back home.

4. Make sure your little can open all of these items before you use them.

5. Stock up on snack items and other add-ins that your child loves. (Back to school sales and holiday items are a great way to stock up)

6. Use leftovers whenever possible, especially when it is a food your child loves.

7. Find out if there is a way for your child to get their food heated or if they have to do it themselves. If they have to do it themselves, make sure this is something they can do. If they cannot get it heated, invest in a good thermal container.

8. Make sure everything they need for lunch (even napkins and cutlery) is in their lunchbox.

9. Invest in a good leakproof water bottle or thermos.

10. Color coordinate the supplies

11. If your child likes to share, include a few extras or they will give their lunch away. My mom always did this with me.

12. Get your child involved in the process from planning, shopping, to prepare.

13. Find a few options for each part of lunch (entree, snack, dessert, veggie, fruit, etc) and keep those on hand. Choose between those for easy packing.

14. Check each week to see which days you may need to pack a lunch.

15. Keep a stash of note cards and a pen in your supplies to jot a note to them. It will brighten their day. My mom always left me notes- especially on field trip days when she couldn't come along.

16. Make their lunch fun. I'm not saying they have to be "Pinterest ready," just as long as your child gets enjoyment out of it, that is what counts.

17. Does your child have allergies or food sensitivities? Make sure this is labeled on their lunch supplies. Maybe also include an EpiPen or Benedryl in their lunch pack if the school allows. Easy access is always for the best.

18. Just in case your child forgets their lunch or you forget to pack it, make sure they always have lunch money in their backpack. You don't want them to be without food.

19. Make sure your child's lunchbox is easy for them to open and to carry. If it cannot be attached to the backpack, a shoulder strap might be useful so that it doesn't get left in the car or bus.

20. Find out if there are any rules at your child's school about lunches brought from home. Some schools have banned peanut items.

Morning, Evening, and Sunday Night Routines: The Why, How, and Some Ideas

We are creatures of habit. Isn't that what they say?  I would agree. Without routines, I would be lost and my kids are the same. When anything is different, they go haywire. When Snapper started school in the spring, I quickly realized that new routines were in order if we were going to be successful. It took a couple days of adding things to my initial layout of routines, but eventually, we got it right.

I made a chart and posted it so she and I could both see it. Although she can't read, she will ask me what things say and that is putting the habit in place. Monkey see monkey do, or something like that.

The why is pretty simple. It makes life easier on everyone to be in a routine. If you have a special needs child, it is especially important to enact routines not only for school but for daily home life as well.

The how isn't all that difficult either.

Decide what needs to be done for a successful morning, evening, and school day.

Be sure to include hygiene and simple things that you always do, like prayers.

Decide when each item needs to be done.

Create a chart of some kind and display it. There are many free printables online, or you can do what I did and write it on pretty paper. Sticking it in a sheet protector for use with a dry erase marker is a good idea as well.

Start the routines a couple of weeks before school starts (we will start on August 1 because school starts August 19th).

Stick to it and adjust it as needed.

Here are some ideas for what could go on your routine chart:

Morning:
Breakfast
Make Bed
Get Dressed
Brush Teeth/ Wash Face/ Wash Hands
Shoes On
Backpack
Do I need a raincoat, umbrella, anything special for the day?
Say Goodbyes

Evening:
Change into play clothes
Clothing in hamper
Clean Room
Read 20 minutes
Check Backpack
Homework/ Signatures
Is anything special needed for tomorrow?
Check weather
Clothes Together
Pajamas
Brush Teeth/ Wash Face/ Wash Hands
Goodnights/ Prayers

Sunday: The Sunday list is for me to do, but it makes my life easier.
Check the weather
Is anything special going on at school that I need to prepare for (pictures, field trip, etc)
Check my calendar- does anyone need to put her on the bus or get her off the bus besides me?
Check lunch calendar- will she eat it or do I need to pack a lunch?
Do I need to wash anything special?

Each family will have a different list of items for each category. The key is finding what works for you. What would you add to the list?
